Inside-the-hull transducer?

I'm having some interference and other problems with my depthfinder. Part of the problem is the transducer location. In thinking about this, I've noticed a small depression around the drain plug/bilge pump area.

Is that clear fiberglass? If so, I could shoot the transducer through the glass without a loss of signal, as opposed to trying to shoot through the balsa core.

I've used the in-hull location on other boats satisfactorily and would like to do so here...as opposed to drilling yet another set of holes in the transom.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

I have an Airmar transducer on my TC and absolutely love it. No worries about the transom mount any more, very powerful.

It is my understanding that the drain plug/bilge pump sump is uncored--that is only glass under the area. Put some water in the sump and put the transducer face down in this water--if it shoots thru the hull with the water, it will work with epoxy, silicone or mineral oil.
 
That was my thinking as well...that it would work. I did a search after I posted, and it came up with a similar thread with conflicting results. Certainly, testing it would be the best way as I have an extra transducer kicking around.

As an FYI-- the unit I'm using is the Humminbird 917, and it seems to work well except for what I think is interference from where the cable is routed or turbulence from the motors. I can get around the turbulence (I hope) by mounting it in the bilge. The cabling problem will be cured as soon as the cable extension arrives.

Now if the wind would drop, I could test out the interior location...
