Impellers on 40hp honda

I can't seem to find much on changing impellers. Anyone let me know how difficult it is to change impellers (got no pee water) on a honda 40?
Would one need any special tools?
Any other parts I should change at the same time.
No honda dealer within 3-4 hours?

I changed them a couple of times on my 45's when I had my C 22. It's not too hard, just go buy the kit.

Before you do though, make sure the hole isn't plugged up. Take a look at where the water comes out of the good engine and take a short section of coat hangar and poke it up that spot :shock: on the engine that's having a problem. Chances are, if you aren't getting a high temp alarm on that engine, it's not the impeller but a clogged hole.

Check in the photos sections of the
OUTBOARDS AND SYSTEMS forum. There are pictures of a Honda 90 impeller change there, very similar to what you need to do and the two pages of the Honda lower unit service manual are there for you too.

Even if you aren't having problems with high temps, it's still a good idea to change the impellers out every 4-5 years. They start to get hardened after awhile and it's good PM just to put new ones in.
 
Thanks I blew air down the tube and its not blocked. Just can't get any water flowing. I hate to run it very much to keep trying.

Michael, first make sure you have the right tube. There are at least two tubes coming through the cowling at that point. Blowing doesn't always do the trick. You can remove the rubber tube from the metal nipple on the engine (it just pulls off). Then use a piece of wire or someting to poke into that nipple.

Also, do you have a high temp indication? I don't remember which light it is but if you've got no flow, it will light and alarm as soon as the engine overheats. If the engine is submerged, running it for a few minutes shouldn't damage the impeller. Mine regularly plugged up, and most of the time, if I didn't get a high temp indication, the engine was still cooling, just not pumping out that holel.

I run on the river and get plugged up inidcator streams (pee'ers ) on a regular basis. I use heavy duty weed whip plastic line to clear my lines. It males all the curves and I can thread a couple of feet into the water jacket. I change impellers every 500 hours here on the muddy Mississippi. A lot of things can contibute to life expectancy. Muddy water, age, operator error (running dry).
 
I got brave and pulled the lower and the impeller was shredded. SO I'm waiting on parts now. Wasn't too hard so far, once you find the hidden bolt and figure out the shifter rod. michael
