I just ordered a Cape Cruiser

Best Day

New member
Hi all, after about a month of looking around, comparing boats and deciding exactly what I wanted, I ordered a Cape Cruiser. I know it's not a C-Dory but since it is part of the same lineage I hope I am welcome here. This site has provided a wealth of knowledge and really helped me decide how to outfit the boat.

I ordered my new boat, "Best Day", with an all blue hull with white bottom, emerald blue interior, two burner wallas, fridge, three batteries, swim step, swing tongue and 90HP Yamaha. Once it's here I'll put on trim tabs, electronics, battery charger, inverter, microwave and other goodies. I'm looking forward to many years of great sea adventures on my new boat.

Anxiously waiting,
Bill

Sounds great....well equipped... I anxiously look forward to seeing you at one of the outings.... it will be neat to see the comparisons side by side.

I'm sure you will enjoy your boat. I'm not sure how the c-brat site will handle things as more cape cruisers are sold. I'm sure noone is going to be turned away just because of what boat they bought yet I'm not sure how they apply here. Welcome.

I was under the impression that the cape cruiser might be a little heavier than the c-dory. Is the 90 hp the recommended engine size? Just curious.

Bill---- I'm sure you will enjoy the new boat, from what I have seen it seems to be a pretty good boat. The blue hull should be interesting, You must have ordered it through Steve in Orange county. I'm planning on going down for an inspection of the model that they have on the floor in the near future, since I missed the Seattle Boat Show. Happy cruising Rich

You didn't mention price - was it a factor in your decision? I am guessing both boats are similarly priced.
If the boat proves popular I guess there will be a www.cc-brats.com site.
Hey, somebody better buy that address.
Too late, I just did!
Guess I can use it for Cape Cod brats - there's plenty of them in this neck of the woods.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I did order the boat from Steve at Elco Marine. He has been very helpful and very knowledgable. I had a lot of questions and for every one he had a very knowledgable answer.

I'm posting here primarily because the boats are so simular. Most things that apply to C-Dorys also apply to Cape Cruisers because of their simular layout and design.

The factory did suggest that I go with a 115HP instead of a 90HP. But I decided to stick with the 90. My reasoning being that the 90 should get a little better fuel economy and here in southern california I will rarely use the extra power of the 115. I did take the Cape Cruiser that Elco Marine has, with a Yamaha 90 on it, for a sea trial. With four of us on board it cruised at 20mph at 4000rpm and topped out at 30mph at 5600rpm. That was with a stock boat, no water and only 10 gallons of gas. Fully equiped it should be a little slower.

Because the two boats are simularly priced, price was not an issue. I compared the two boats a lot over the last month. I really wanted to buy a C-Dory because of its strong reputation and proven design. I was scared of the Cape Cruiser because it is a new company and a new design. With any new design there will be bugs that need to be worked out. The main factor that swinged me towards the Cape Cruiser was that it handles the water a little better. Because it is heavier and has a slightly more aggresive hull, given the same water, you are able to go about 2-4mph faster. That was a big deal for me and made my decision. To be honest if someone made a boat simular to the C-Dory or Cape Cruiser with a 10-15 degree deadrise I would have seriously looked at them. If I had the money and tow vehicle I would love to own a C-Ranger. They lood great.

I saw your boat at the Del Mar "Fred Hall" show. Steve had it down here for the show. Nice boat, perfectly powered. anchor hawse pipe in a much better location. I would not sell my C-Dory to buy one, but if it had been a choice at the time, it might have been a tossup. I do NOT like the gas tanks exposed like the Crusader/Cruiser though. They need a curtain or something to cover 'em up. OTOH, you can fasten things to the side of the tanks with good adhesive. Something ya can't do with ours.

Glad to see ya here.

Don

Bill,

Congratulations on your new boat!!

I don't think you can go wrong with a Cape Cruiser. The designer is Ben Toland, son of the designer of the C-Dorys and the factory is where C-Dorys were built prior to the move to the new factory.

The hull design is based on the Pro Angler 26 which was build as a C-Dory in the late 80's.

Enjoy!

Congratulations Bill . you will love that Boat , wish sometimes that I could make a trip in that time machine to bring me back 12 months or so? I probably be catching big butts in a CC too? Got my dealer pis.... off at me, telling me that I am impossible to please , tells me that Jeff is also Pis..... off at me . But my beautiful C-Dory still as some minor issues that the dealer never fixed ? Some of you will say stop bugging the factory and the dealer , fix this broken hinge yourself, fix those loose screws..... I probably never again take my boat back to my dealer , and I am kind of scared to phone Jeff even just to say hy, eh. What was a 15 years dream to own the famous C-Dory turn out to be something different. In my book it does not really matters what kind of boat engine you buy, when you do purchase those expensive toys . If the people that sell them to you are only interested in the sale you will be desappointed after those checks get cashed.

Welcome, Welcome! I for one think it's awesome and just great that you are here to express that! I think the CapeCruisers and C-brats should have a bright future ahead of themselves.
Why should we be seperated when we're so alike? I hope you can integrate fully into this 'cult' of ours and be an asset in the future. :thup

Bill, I hope others will agree with me that your decision is based on what "you wanted" and everything is a compromise, a word we find a lot here in c-brats; even the decision of purchase.

Hi Bill,
Congratulations on your new boat. I owned a Toland 18-8 and was cordially welcomed at the C-Dory gatherings, even though my boat was not an "official" C-Dory. It seems that there are more similarities than differences between the CC and the C-D. I hope you will post some photos of your new boat.
Cheers!

I'm posting this duplicate post here because it really belongs here more than on the other thread:

Friends-

Actually, Im sure we have quite a few members and guests here who are not C-Dory owners. Most sites allow guests and many encourage them.

There is nothing here to stop them from reading the discussions, and after they register w/o any proof of C-D ownership, they are allowed to post just like the rest of us. The information is free and the discussion open to their participation. No problem so far.

Where we seem to get into difficulties is when we have to deal with someone who wants to make a point that he or she chose the Cape Cruiser over the C-Dory, then continues to press the issue that they made the right choice.

End of friendly discussion for a number of reasons.

If I were a new Cape Cruiser owner, I'd go low profile, take in all this site has to offer, and begin the task of building a Cape Cruiser website ASAP
to deal with specific CC issues, which those of us who own a C-Dory can't fully help with since we don't have the same boat.

I certainly wouldn't waste my time arguing with a bunch of C-Dory owners that I just bought a better boat than theirs, which is like waving a red flag in front of a bull during mating season!

Joe.

Yes, indeed very well said. I admit to a bit of angst when I first saw this thread. I suspect others have as well, yet remained polite, supportive and silent.

I suppose as a military officer, I'm ok speaking my mind...

Certainly there are numerous positive aspects to many boat lines presently available for retail sale. Many of which I wouldnt mind owning (simply cant come up with the $$ for that 62' Nordhavn). And, of course I encourage all who wish to enjoy the contents of our vast library to come and explore. Surely it is a wealth of information, experiences and photo libraries.

That being said, I, and I suspect others, come here to read of and share in the love I have for my (our) C-Dory. Of course it is simply a personal perspective, but I would rather not read of a gentleman beaming over his purchase from another manufacturer. Again, just my personal opinion.

Low profile...nice idea. Read, learn, relax and enjoy all that this site has to offer... yet please respect the perspective that we are here to share a passion for a particular name brand of boat which I think transcends just a style of boat.

Yes? No? Maybe?

Again, just my opinion.

Competition is good and there is no doubt that Cape Cruiser is direct competition to C-dory. It's the old Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge thing. Any reasonable person would expect some sparks to fly if some Ford boys started posting on the Chevy or Dodge websites, and vice versa. It would get nasty, and that's not what we need and want on this website. It's my opinion that this website is for C-Dory enthusiasts, not Cape Cruiser or Bayliner.

I agree with the general climate of welcome to C-Brats. I saw the Cape Cruiser at the Everett Boat show. I thought it was a C-Dory until I got right up to it. The boats seem to be much alike so perhaps a lot of the accumulated wisdom (and folderol!! :) ) of this site will help you as it has helped me, a newbie C-Dory owner. My only gripe about the Cape Cruiser was that the representative at the show felt he had to make his points about the C.C. by putting down the C-Dory and telling me in great detail how the Cape Cruiser was what a C-Dory should be but wasn't. I didn't much appreciate that and hope we don't get anything like that here.

Enjoy your boat and welcome.

Yes, Gary! Very well stated.

I for one have grown weary of this topic. It seems like anytime anyone mentions Cape Cruiser, people react in a Pavlonian manner. I personally don't get the sense that Best Day was in any way trying to gloat or put C-Dorys down in any way. As Joe and Gary have stated so eloquently, owners of other brands are welcome on this site, to participate, learn and absorb but in the end, this is a site about a particular name brand of boat as Gary states, our beloved C-Dorys. Hopefully in time, owners of CC's will start their own website but until then, let's hope they keep a low profile and CD owners keep their perspective and not let this get out of hand.

Congratulations Best Day, I hope you enjoy your new boat as much as Caryn and I have enjoyed C-Dancer, our beautiful C-Dory.
Peter
