Hey Gang,

Has anyone had experience with the Hummingbird 798ci SI Combo (or similar unit)? I am planning on using it in freshwater to search for historic sites flooded out when the Lake Wateree dam was built in the early 1900's. This lake is in SC.

I'm especially interested in the side scan sonar and the downlook imaging.

Any info/help would be appreciated. :)

Just got a DI model and like it. Have not interpreted all of the picture yet.
I think that the Garmin is probably better but at 3 times the price.

I have an 898cSI that I have used for 2 years now. It is ok for salt water, It is fantastic in fresh down to 150' or so & the side scan is nice. If I was going to do it over I would go back to Lowrance. I am in Deep salt water most of the time & the Humminbird gets lost after 500' or so. :wink: :mrgreen:
 
I have used an 898cSI for a couple seasons. It’s a great unit. The Side/down imaging is pretty cool. I have looked at ship wrecks on Lake Erie. You have to play around with distance from the target. A calm sea helps. If you add a SD card you can capture the images and view them on a PC.
Humminbird has a great tech support team. I have used them for simple questions like how to dim the display and technical issues like NMEA 183 connections to my radar for heading information.
I can edit and rename my waypoints on the PC. It also backs them up.
Only downside is it won’t communicate with my Garmin AutoPilot system.

Thanks. I have one of the older Lowrance units (GPS and fishfinder) and it usually does what it is suppose to. It will hang up once in a while.

I'll be using it in a fairly shallow freshwater lake in depths from 3' to 100'. The ability to download the info onto my computer would be great. :D
