How about any of you who have overturned a boat, sunk a boat or lost a boat due to accident or dumb actions. It would be a good learning thread.

I'll start out. Two close calls. My wife had to swim to the new CD this past summer when I didn't think I needed to anchor while we were taking a quick swim. (Yes, I told her to please go get the boat. I was a sinker, she is a floater...naturally she should go get the boat...what real man would have deprived his 67 year old wife the opportunity to shine!)

Lesson learned: never ever leave the boat without it being anchored or tied up to something.

In 1966 I had a 19 foot wooden cruiser. I was on Palisades Lake in Idaho and a huge gusty front moved through. I headed to shore, and just got the bow onto the shore, which lifted the bow and put the stern down enough that waves broke over the stern and filled the aft two thirds of the boat with water and put the stern on the bottom. After the front went through, we bailed the boat out and went on about our fishing. Lesson learned was:

When quick gusty fronts come through kicking up big waves, stay on the water and put the nose of the boat into them 'till the front passes through. Of course, there are times when you may still want to be running to a shelter, but be sure you can out run the waves.
