Honda Throttle Friction Lock

Hello,

Was wondering if anyone had any experience with the friciton lock (drag) on my style Honda throttle. I can set my power settings fine, but if we hit a few bumps on the water the starboard throttle starts backing off. There must be a way to adjust the friction on this throttle but I don't see it.

Anyone out there have first hand knowledge with this throttle?

Your honda manual actually covers this. They show several type's of throttle controls and how to adjust them. I do believe you have to take the cover off.
 
You can often find parts illustrations online, a la the one for Suzukis at Brown's Point marine http://www.brownspoint.com/ This will help you find the adjustment. You can also order a shop manual - which I highly recommend. See Honda's web page at http://www.honda-marine.com/FAQs.aspx. Or - call a Honda mechanic. Any one of them worth their salt should simply tell you over the phone what to do or that it's not possible for you to do it.
 
I dont' have dual controls, but do have the shop manual for the Honda 90, vintage 2003. Your controls appear a little different, but the bottom line seems to be as follows: remove the top of the case, locate the two top friction set screws in the inner housing assembly where the individual control handles are inserted into collars on the assembly (one screw for each handle), and tighten the screws to you satisfaction. If you remove the case top and can't locate the friction screws, you haven't hurt anything.

After you've made the adjustments, put a dab of colored nail polish on part of each screw, and the adjoining threaded area, so that if you need to make further adjustments, you can tell if the screws are backing out on their own. If so, you can stop that with a little dab of the most gentle locktite (NOT red, which requires 500 degree heat to release!).

Let us know how it works out. Shouldn't be any problem.
 
Don't have Hondas, but have adjusted my dual contol Suzukis. You remove the cover and turn the adjustments screws. Very simple. I do wish, however, that the controls were not mounted flat as they are, but tilted up 45 degrees. As they sit now, I have to tighten the friction screws as tight as I can get them to prevent the throttles from being jarred forward in rough seas. If they were mounted somehow with the forward edge tilted up 45 degrees, it would be less suseptible to movement, and easier to shift from forward to reverse.
 
If you remove the black screws that hold the black plastic cover down and remove the plastic cover you will find a slotted adjusting screw. A half turn to the right is a good place to start at. The friction plate will tend to ware in when new and require readjusting sometimes. The black plastic cover sometimes can be difficult remove, so you may have wiggle it just right.

I have a Yamaha twin binnacle, looks like about the same arrangement. The friction adjusting screws are under the cover at the rear on mine. I drilled 2 clean holes in the cover to access the friction screws without having to remove the cover. Haven't touched them in 3 1/2 yrs, but might need to do a touch-up some day, nice to be able to do it while at sea under different conditions to get it right.

I think you guys have it right, unfortunately I am have been in TX working since I started this post and my boat is sitting in my driveway in AK under a humongous tarp. I will be back within the next 3 weeks and I will pull the cover off the throttle housing.

Last time I looked at this post I had just one reply, I looked at it today and saw that many more had come in right after I had checked it last.

I will post my results, unfortunately it may be spring before I really know how well it works, since at -10 F the throttle's are probably a little stiff right now without adjustment.

The advice was good, remove the cover and adjust the friction screw. Now the throttle stays where I put it. Only problem was this was the first removal of the four screws on the cover and they took so much pressure to remove that they were right on the edge of stripping.
