Honda tach erratic

My 2003 Honda 200hp has an erratic tach. If I give it the old fist on top it seems to straighten out but it still wanders around a little.

What is the problem?????
Thx.
Jack

Jack- Sounds like a loose wire / bad ground problem. Check all connections for looseness and corrosion, then look for a broken / corroded wire. If not found visually, check with ohmeter for resistance and / or run a jumper wire to provide good alternate connection.

Of course, could be in the tach itself or in the engine, but the KISS Principle says check the most obvious / probable first.

Good Luck!

Jack,
My 90 Honda tach stated acting wacky like yours, about 2 years ago. I checked for all of the normal stuff, like loose wires, but no luck. I purchased this "HONDA 06383-ZV5-315 set resistor assembly" on eBay and installed it and all of the odd fluctuations went away.
I was going to buy a new tach, but glad that I was able to find a simple and cheap fix, as I have an hour meter in my tach and did not want to loose that information.

I hae an '03 BF90 too, and had the same issues. Loose wire in back. My father in law fixed it while we were underway one day in about three seconds.

Agree with the loose wire suggestions. It has happened twice on our cruiser. The nuts are quite difficult to get to, so getting them tight can be a real problem.

I had that happen as well. To rule out a tach malfunction I switched out the leads from the 2nd tach. After seeing that one bounce too I knew the tach wasn't the problem. One advantage of twins! Yay Twins!
