Honda buzzer

One of my 2002 Honda 40 buzzes randomly (at least to me it's random). A Honda pro checked it out and found pinched wires in the control box and a test run had no buzzing. However, a short test run is no comparison to a Lake Superior crossings which had random buzzing. No warning lights come on, no overheating, engines run fine. Any suggestions? It's been happening for 2 full seasons with about 80 hours/yr.

DO you mean there is a buzzer sounding or that the engine makes a buzzing noise?

Also, you say the tech found pinched wires, did he repair them?
 
2002 40s have fault codes? That's cool!
 
The buzzer buzzing is the alarm buzzer in the control box. Yes the Honda pro did fix the pinched wires. I will check with the pro to see if he checked fault codes.

Checked with the pro and no fault codes on carburetored Hondas. Guess I'll just put up with some random buzzing until it gets persistent.

Well, a buzzer only buzzes when it gets power. So, it seems reasonable to trace the wires back from the buzzer to the engine and see what powers the buzzer.

There's two possibilities. The buzzer may get 12V from the engine source and is grounded internally (or thereabouts.) Or, the buzzer may get 12V continuously and the engine sensor provides the ground.

Try disconnecting the engine end, which may be only 1 wire and see if the buzzer sounds. If it doesn't the problem is in the engine. If it does, the problem is in the wiring. You're not paying attention to it anyway so it's safe. And that's a long wire from the engine controls to the engine.

Thanks Boris. A logical plan to isolate the problem and it follows what the pro said which was it was either a bad sensor or a ground short in a wire. Next time out I'll give it a try.

Tried to tell you no codes on carbed Hondas :-)
 
I had an overheat (continuous) buzzer recently on my '05 Honda 90. Unplugging it resulted in a 'double beep' instead of a continuous one. Turned out to be a faulty sensor. Thanks Carl and EQ!
