I just bought a 2009 TomCat and have the transponder for the fish finder/depth mounted on the transom. It is not working at speeds over about 8 knots due (I assume) to turbulence. I'm thinking I may need an in-hull mount or I may have to go with a through-hull fitting.

The catamaran hulls obvioously complicate things and I want to get it right.

Can anyone give me some advice about where I should locate this?

I have two on my TC. An external one for the Raymarine system on the outside of the port sponson, at the lowest part which is about 18" under water at the flat spot on the sponson, mounted per instructions so that the bottom is parallel with the hull and slightly below (1/8" or so). It works fine.

The other is for the Garmin system and is internal, in the stbd sponson in the low spot back near the bilge pump. It's held to the hull by 4200, filled with antifreeze and works OK, but not as well as the other one.

Mounted correctly, both should work just fine.

How is yours mounted?

Welcome to the club! Shoot a PM to Tyboo or DaNag to request a photo album. You can then upload photo's.

There is an area on your starboard sponson aft just forward of your starboard bilge that is free of coring. This is where you can mount an In Hull (shoot through) transducer. Based on my measurements, the deadrise angle on our sponsons is 14 degrees. I use an Airmar 600w InHull transducer and can keep bottom lock at all speeds. It also prevents the need to drill into your hull.

It's not easy to find this spot at first. Once you find it, it will be totally obvious (if that makes any sense). Here is a thread discussing your very question:

On the 2nd page you can see a picture of where it is located.

Good luck with the job.
