Handi Heater???

Pat rick-

Looks just about exactly like a Mr. Buddy heater to me, and certinly works on the same principles-a catalytic heater using propane. Has relatively clean output, but reccommended for use only with a mopderate amount of ventilation, such as a partially cracked open window. The small amount of carbon monoxide is not a problem with such ventilation. Not reccommended for closed cabins or rooms. Consumes oxygen, so must also be ventilated for that reason, also. Good choice for your 18 footer! Joe.

Bingo! Mr. Buddy Heater.... I knew I had read some links on this and/or the other site about these heaters. Yep, I know for sure not to lock up tight with them, but I really need something to be able to enjoy this boat when I take her up to Nashville for a week. Still a bit cool up there during Christmas.... and need a bit more than egg nog too... :cocktail

Thanks for the feedback and welcome any other ideas for what I am attempting to accomplish here.

I think a kerosene heater would put out more heat. Kero-sun made a small round heater that was a dab bigger than the propane one you listed. They are very efficient, reliable and the round ones throw heat 360 degrees. UL approved for indoor use. Puts off that fireplace glow after dark. Fairly clean burning but still need ventalation which your 18 seems to have :teeth .

The safety tip over switch is effective and sensitive. It is a heavy cone shaped weight that is balanced on the small end. It doesent take much jar to trip one. You could wrap that weight with a bit of masking tape if it proves to sensitive. Another idea would be to hang the unit just off the floor up near the v-birth. Make it like a gimbaled lamp where it could move and swing to absorb boat movement but not swing all over. That way it would stay somewhat level when the bow rises.

I bought a larger one to heat my hooch in Korea back in 1988 for three years. (Thats all I used) I have used it every year since for an imitation fireplace/instant heat. Still running on the original wick. Fantastic reliability when used as directed.

I had a conversation with 416rigby in Alaska about the buddy heaters. He loves it. They seem to be reasonable heat source. When I get one Im going to test the air with quality in the cabin with a couple of CO monitors we use at work. They also measure O2 % as well as a couple other things. Im a little sceptical of ventless combustion. I will post the results. I hope to have a Mr. heater Buddy unit (the smaller one) sometime after the holidays. I really don't think it will take much to take the chill out the air in the cabin space of a C-Dory.

I have a Coleman catastropic heater that I've used in the boat, one of these, http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemanc ... oryid=3000 it's the same kind of heater. It puts out the heat but you also end up with a nice rain forrest affect in the cabin. Zodi makes a tent heater thet sets up outside the tent and ducts the heat inside, I always thought that might be a good way to get some heat without the added moisture, it would be worth a look http://store.yahoo.com/fulfillmentadven ... etehe.html

yup, it's one of those cataclysmic type heaters :)

Malapropism? nope...oh sure I may be a little shy of the ideal WOT RPM but I like the 4 blade compprops and they don't offer much of a choice of pitches

Hunh!?? No slider or spitball? What's this world coming to? Maybe a Volvo DuoProp will be under your tree ...

nope, just bringing the heat..see....now we're back on topic and don't have to worry about Tyboo bringing the hammer down on us :)

Wow.... that Zodi Tent Heater gig may have some potential for the 18 Angler.

Mount that puppy on the roof with a 20lb bottle of propane, run the hoses down the roofline into the side windows, blowing in and cross the windshield area..... hummm a defrost system too for those ....

"Oh no...we just turned about and are heading into the cold wind/air and the windshield just fogged up to the max..." moments...

Pat,

I've used one of those Mr. Buddy heaters for 2 years, but only oassionally during Spring and Fall as our New England winters are too cold for much boating. They work great, especially while moving so the condensation is vented out. I never leave it running while sleeping. For a cheap ($80) and easy temporary solution, they are great. Get a CO alarm and you'll be all set w/ the window cracked.

I've been using my heater buddy in my 16 cruiser. It puts out more heat than I use, the low setting is fine. Home depot around $80. I actually read the instructions since my body is with-in reach of the of the bomb as is my 6 gallon fuel tank- how much room do you think is in a 16 footer! Anyway, It advises an 8" square opening allowing fresh air in to feed the O2. The water out-put is considerable and you will need the cabin boy or girl keep the wind shield clear.

Yep, sure love our Mr Heater Portable Buddy. We have plenty of ventilation through the seams of the canvas on our boat, but it has O2 sensor and tip over switch. Works great. They are made for indoor use. Good idea to crack a window, though, just for extra safety. Remember to turn it up to high setting when first starting up, then after the ceramic glows orange, you can turn it down to low if desired. It sure takes the chill off and helps us defog the windows. Bottles of propane last a long time and there's NO SMELL.
