Halibut

I just joined this group and I just bought a 1992 22' Cruiser. On my 3rd trip out last May, I caught a 312 pound halibut. If I can figure out how to get the picture on here I will. My boat is in the background of the picture. I was also wondering if there is a place to look at C-dory accessories. I was interested in different canvases or just neat stuff. Ron :P

For a measly 100 lbs or so of your halibut, I will explain in detail how to get the picture on here! Actually, assuming you have an album (if not, why not, Bill?), just add the pic to your album, and then to put the pic in a message (and I always struggle with this part), you just type in something like:
{img}http://www.c-brat.net/albums/Akangler/imagename.sized.jpg{/img} (replace the curly brackets with square brackets, I had to fool the board software) and the pic will magically appear in your message...

Nice little spot in the picture I can envision my self in that setting just looks so serene.

Anyhow less than 30 days away from the opener and time to resurface the thread.

Got my Newport moorage all set B-10 same as last year and will be tyring to hit all three days of the frist three weekend.
The hydraulic steering will be here next week (arm feel better already)
Ordered some cool stainless heavy duty pole holders (link here)

Next is a trip to Englunds for more 16/0 hooks McMahon swivels, 325 lb tuna cord and 40 oz weights.

Ray did you get your bearing problems fixed? and are you going to hit the opening weekend? Hope to see you there

Larry and BC you going to try it? Have some open seats let me know if you would like a ride be happy to take you out.

Hey SteveJ,, I don't think we'll be giving the Hallibut a try this year, thanks for the invite however..... That new hydraulic steering should free up a hand to allow you to play computer games on your way out to the deep :)

Larry be great to have you along.
The season runs Thursday through Saturday starting May 13th and ends June 12th
I have open seats on May 13, 14 and May 20, 21
Tom and Rene' are thinking they might go on the 15th

Could be more dates in late June and July depending on quota remaining
Let me know if you can make any of the above and we can work out the details as the date gets closer.

I think I'm in.
I have the budget and all the parts needed to fix the trailer (finally).
It took the factory guys a couple of tries to get it right.
I will know this weekends as I plan to complete repairs on the trailer and finally shake down the boat. Maybe Newport.....
If I don't show up my crew will lynch me :wink

All I have to do is replace the stolen bearing buddies, repack the bearings after cleaning them up and hit the road.
Hey Steve, I have Master and Commander on DVD, :film when does the theater on Shearwater open :film ?

Looking to arive on Wednesday afternoon and try to make bait and camp then depart early early Thursday for the Chicken Ranch.

Can't wait :D Hal-i- :moon

Ray I hope to get into Newport around 3:00 Wednesday. Need to do a few last minute things on the boat (mount pole holders) then will be up in the lot spot 38.

Look me up if you need another pole in the water when you go out for herring
Bought some big sardines (11 to 12 inch) going to try those this year also. Spendy little buggers but they are nice fatties and full of oil. Should lay down a fine sent trail.

Sooo excited ................

See you there

I guess we're just spoiled here in Kodiak when it comes to fishing. I can drive the boat half a mile and catch halibut, lingcod, rockfish, and salmon. Sometimes it takes hearing how much work some one else has to do to make you appreciate what you have. Two weeks ago, we caught a 103 pounder, and last weekend a 65 and a 203. Life is good!

On the gear topic, most folks up here seem to use lighter stuff than what you folks are using in the NW. My rod is a medium action Sturdy Stik, Penn 330 GTI filled with 80lb Tuffline and a ball bearing snap swivel. Terminal gear...some folks use a chunk of frozen herring on a circle hook with a 1lb ball on a dropper. I like a glow-in-the-dark 1lb jig with a chunk of herring on the hook or a B2 squid. My wife has a jig with spinner attached. The bottom line is that it really doesn't matter...halibut will eat anything they can fit in their mouth!

Since we're looking at retirement in the NW in a few years, where is this Rockpile and Chickenranch you guys are talking about? How far out does one have to go to get into halibut? I lived in North Bend, OR for 4 years, but never fished there...more of a hunter.

Well the Chicken Ranch is about 36 miles out and the Rock pile is just over 10. The water here is quite a bit deeper than what you are fishing too, at least I think so. There are spots on the Ranch that are 800 feet deep. The pile is relatively shallow at depths from 180 to 240 feet.
There is a strong current here and the drift is fast. With all the lines out there we use heavy weights to keep our lines straight to minimize catching a dozen charter lines at a time, from 1 to 4#.
While most baits will work, fresh herring from the bay are my go to bait. It has saved several trips and works when nothing else will.
When you get down here and want to get out drop me a line and we can get together to talk shop.
For terminal tackle I use homade rigs based on the Pilar No excuse Halibut rig.
It is a two part rig, 18" plastic coated steel cable to a 300# swivel to a section of about 20" plastic coated steel cable with a glow B2 Squid or a Glow Hoochie with either a 16 or 20/0 circle hook that has a swivle, offset shank and custome sparpened knife edge point. It works for me.
After the season I will try to post some pics or you can get on www.ifish.net discussion board and look at the Salty Dogs board and do a search on the no excuse halibut rig for a pictorial on how to make them.

I am leaving for the beach in a matter of hours. I can hardley wait....

Steve,
We're good to go. I figure you're out in the big deep and outta earshot. Hope you're connecting with 'em out there. Looking forward to catching up with you tonight unless we hear otherwise!!!

You are in for a treat, Tom & Rene. Stevej took me out yesterday to the Chicken Ranch for my maiden halibut fishing trip. I had a blast, caught my first halibut. We caught our limit of hali's.
Thanks a million Steve, for the very memorable and enjoyable trip!

Hey Larry,

Now I know where you've been hiding out. Does this mean the Helen O's tackle box will have some new stuff from Englunds? If you don't get to wraped up in big flat fish, come chase a down river sturgeon. And I still have the Dri-deck waiting for you too.

Tim

Tim

We'll have to get together real soon and chase some sturgies. I've never fished them downriver and would much appreciate your guidance. I'll be giving you a call soon.

Three days fishing, three boat limits of Halibut including the port record for the season so far at 58 inches!
Pics and more stories later. Got to deal with packing fish and resting up. I am headed back very soon :D

Opening week for halibut was a blast Mike glad you enjoyed the trip

I ordered the rod holders from http://www.outdoorsuperstore.com/store/ ... OD+HOLDERS

The dogs have raised the price by $9 dollars My 4/29 invoice shows me paying $58.25 Item #319650 (top mount on the roof) One other thing my rails are close to 1 1/8 inch so I removed half of the insert to fit.

Back to the halibut, we only got two friday both in the 33" range, caught a huge skate around 4 feet across thought I was reeling a sunken boat up from 600 feet. Dang thing spread it wings and made me winch it up 3 feet at a time. Little lumpy coming home Friday with about 3' of wind wave.

Tom and Rene' got in Friday night (Primitive) got out a little after 6:00 Saturday morning ocean was like a lake all day. Fished and fished for 4 skates way to many snags but no halibut to show after 6 plus hours.

Moved south a few miles at 3:00 and Tom hooks into a very nice 30 lb halibut in the first 5 minutes. Made a circle back and dropped down again this time Rene' hooks up a fish. 45 minutes later this is what we brought aboard:

Great time had by all, and once again out fished by Ray

Tom and I had an amazing time out in the blue deep with Steve J. on the Shearwater. If you have an opportunity to go out for halibut, take it!

I was sore from jigging all morning, and thankfully Steve had spelled me in the afternoon, but after Tom pulls up this nice fish I was ready to try it again. About a half hour of jigging later I had a good bite. I gave it slack then could feel the steady pull and knew he was mine if I could just keep on reeling! Easier said than done as from that depth. It was grueling. The term "orgasmic" came up but I was comparing it more with childbirth. I had to switch to “labor breathing”. My rhythm was lift, reel and rest. Finally, after a half hour or so, it surfaced and the darn thing was huge (OK, not as big as Rays or anything). But If I’d have known from the beginning how large he was I’d have probably given up! We weren’t sure it would fit but Steve netted it like a pro.

Sunday Tom and our son Dane cooked the best fish’n chips while I vacuum-packed fish.
I was sore for days. And it was worth it!

I've posted a picture of Tom and his fish on the Primative album, more TK.
Are there instructions on how to link a photo to a message on the MAC?
