Greasy Question

So, I'm doing my own maintenance now on my 2009 Yamaha 90 -- following the service manual. And, under 'Lubricating' they have 3 different types of grease listed.

For tilt tube, engine mount, and cowling locks they list "Water Resistant Grease" (Yamaha grease A); for starter gear at flywheel they list "Low Temperature Resistant Grease" (Yamaha Grease C) ; and for propeller shaft & under prop they list "Corrosion Resistant Grease" (Yamaha Grease D).

On the Yamaha web site they just sell "Marine Grease".

So my question. Can I just use my basic marine grease from West Marine for all three applications, or do I really need to track down theses 3 types? BTW -- the service manual nor the Yamaha website actually describes what type of grease these are so I don't know how using a stock grease effects compatability issues.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If I get a vote, here's what I would think.

If you use a good waterproof grease, that should do the trick for all those places. If you're superstitious, get some high temp silicone grease for the flywheel, otherwise don't worry.

Otherwise call Yahama customer service: your call is important to us, listen carefully as our menu has changed, please read our FAQ on our website. Since you're willing to buy something, they should be able to tell you what that really means.

However I don't know if I have a vote.

Thanks Boris -- that's where I'm leaning. Anyone know of any circumstances where that approach (just using a good marine grease for everything) would be a problem?

No, not probably, but they, probably, do use specific lubricants on the original factory installations, but don't, probably, offer them at the dealer level, so that probably, the idiots that don't service their motors, properly, have a better chance at, probably, getting them to survive, anyway, probably.

I use marine grease on wheel bearings, and my steering fittings, prop shaft and tilt shaft. But for the for the starter gear they want a low temp grease so it does not get sticky when it's cold out is my guess. That gear needs to move up down on the shaft so thick grease might cause it to hang up in colder temperatures.

I use one Yammie grease in the grease gun

and for the rest the purple TGG from Johnson/Evinrude.
I think it is the same grease but less expensive than the other brand names.

I buy large tubes and repack into smaller containers

I did buy a tube off WR #2 grease but have not used it yet

One consideration worth exploring is whether using non-Yamaha lubricants will give them an excuse for denying a warranty claim. Matt? Marc?
