On a recent excursion out of Whittier Ak, we were boarded by the "Defenders of the Homeland".
Now don't get me wrong, I'm a true blue kind of guy even been in the service myself, even went to Viet Nam!
Here's the part that got me. When a half dozen of them pull up in their super cool Zodiac, armed with the latest communication gadgets (radios), handguns, etc it was an impressive sight.
Then they start talking! Opening line was why are you here and what is your purpose for being here!
It's a good thing I don't think fast in situations like that, cause I told my wife later I should have come back with" Were waiting for those Russians to come down off that hill and buy this load of Cocaine I have in the back of the boat and we were wiling away the time engaged in wild Monkey sex until they got here!
Gimme a break Gram and PaPaw were anchored in the rain trying to keep the cabin dry, just like everyone else that day.
That woman Lt. who was leading the pack sure had pretty eyes though!

I doubt you really seriously thought about saying that. You would still be putting things back in place after the rather thorough search. It would be highly advisable not to ever joke around with the Coasties about things they take pretty seriously. They are going to laugh about as hard as the Airport Security would if you joked about having a weapon.

As I can attest to, more people talk themselves into tickets than out of them.

Opening line was why are you here and what is your purpose for being here!

Now, if you said something like,

Wondering how I could get a woman with eyes as pretty as yours to come aboard without offending the Mrs. or doing anything illegal.

You might have gotten a smile out of them and felt more in control. I think it's the lack of having any control over the situation that is most unsettling. We all think we're "masters of our domain" until people with guns say otherwise. Best it was the good guys and not the bad guys.

BTW - I'm still waiting for the book tour.

When we got stopped and inspected by the Coast Guard last year, before they set foot on our boat they asked if we had any firearms aboard. That sounded like good procedure and prioritizing to me. There were three petty officers in a rigid inflatable. They were very respectful and professional.

USA citizens, in the USA, in a no threat location. Hmmmm

The arbitrary exercise of the "authority imperative" by various government agencies who have been made to feel they are the bulwark against total anarchy seems to be a disturbing reflection of the times in which we live. Unfortunately these agents are often so absorbed by their "mission" that any legal challenge or jocular response often meets with a rather unbalanced reaction - arrest, search and seizure.
It is a monster of our own creation.
