gods of the seas are unforgiving

We had our boat the Susan E renamed the C-Dore' at Friday Harbor this year. When asked if we had the new name on the boat I had said "no" only to realize later that it was under the cushion.

This is the rest of the story.
Leaving Friday Harbor the weather wasn't bad, got a little worse later on. We got thru Deception Pass after missing slack by less then half hour. Stopped to fill up the diesel for the wallas only to have drifted into the sand bar in Skagit Bay at the entrance to Laconner. Got out of that after a few hectic minutes. About 5 miles we hear a THUMP look behind the boat and see a 2x2x12 inch twig that we ran over. Causing the prop to spin out in the hub, 8 knots rest of the way home.
Three hours later we dock the boat glad no one was there to watch, the worst one we did yet.
Loading the boat on the trailer was not any better. No need to lower the GPS antenna it broke at the mount.

Month later, we go the the lake to test the new prop, rounding the curve in the driveway the trailer hits a stump causing the boat to jump 6 inches off the bunks. The S hook on the transom strap was now straight. Repaired it and then got on the road, 30 feet from the house, flat tire. Bent the rim too, replaced the tire wondering what else could happen to us.
Well we made it back ok. The prop worked fine now. Tomorrow we are going out in the bay and doing the ceremony with no new name on board and using some of the best champagne we can get. Not soda pop.

Lesson is do not play with the gods of the sea.

...and that is why I am not changing the name of my boat.

It is quite a process, as I understand you have to un-name the boat first then re-name it with all the correct ceremony. Seems like an awful lot of work.

Thank you for your post. We have yet to put our new name on the boat so this led me to looking for a renaming ceremony for vessels. Which brought me to this document.

We will be having a ceremony as soon as the boat is pulled together and detailed with the new name.

Yeah, A few years ago I had a day out on the water much like yours. One thing after another. I totaled up the cost of the day and it came out to be a hair over 4 bills. My son who was 9 or 10 at the time learned a whole bunch of new words that day.

This is something that I have been worrying about. I recently changed the name of our boat from " Tonka " to "Amy Jo" without performing any kind of ceremony. I hope that the Sea Gods will forgive me.

Just a thought. (My thoughts anyway.) Seems like most of those things could have been prevented with fore thought, due diligence and preventive maintainance. Not to say that sometimes we still don't get bit by happenstance, but situational awareness and good preplanning combined with the above can still make the daily path less bumpy.

Good story though. Thanks.

Yikes. I am going to keep all toes and fingers crossed. We did do a name change ceremony out in the middle of Haro Straight when we changed her to Thallasa . Champagne, food, good bye to old name, toast to Neptune but it sounds like we may have missed a few steps. I still have not caught a fish on her yet, Hmmmmm

who was it that performed the ceremony? It was Jim and not Dave. Its that lousy "vestment" hawaiian shirt of his. I think its faulty or so dirty, he never washes it, that the magic is gone or cant get out pass the cheeto stains. Add that to the fact that Jim keeps getting the words wrong and we maybe in trouble. I think Jim may have to make a sacrifice to Neptune or sign up for re-meddle ceremony training( which you can do on line I hear) ( the training not the sacrifice). I say we just toss him and that dam shirt off a short pier next gathering. Who's with me???

I like the idea of a boat name, and I like to be able to see same from somewhere outside of 20 yards. It is not a religion, it's not voodoo, it is practical, habit, passion and fun. it is not required. Once the new owner's name is on the title and registration I think it is up to them what name and when they put it on the boat. Sure it is fun, and the naming ceremony is a good excuse for getting together and some other things, but good planning, exercising common safety practices, and practiced situation awareness. Gambling may be legal at the casino, but it is dangerous on the water, putting lives at risk. Yes there are some times and some things that come up but they are minimized by following good practices.

Well, I don't know about renaming and the gods (small g,) but I do know about care, foresight, planning and careful maintenance.

That's what I should have done after the fact. Care, foresight, planning and careful maintenance would have helped on my first 2 marriages and even more with the cruising we've done. As a result my new guide to life is:

"Success in life is not how careful you're the first time, but how you recover from the aftermath."

And, askim, you now are a success. You have nicely recovered.

Boris

P.S. I've renamed several boats on the spur of the moment, though those are not the names Judy wants me to use.

Upon further reflection, could it be that there was some bad karma created since Tom had not yet named his next boat before de-christening the prior one?

THe naming of the 27 is coming down to one of us just giving in. I like the idea of "big susan" because the boat is bigger and susan thinks its cute but I just get a bad feeling when I say it and others just give me a look like " glad hes not my husband"

Then there is the Susan e square, which I have name tags for. and we both like it but we dont love it.

susan does not like susan e 2 and neither do I really.

I like " susan E" and there is no current susan e so that will work but some say "well that was your last boat"

So for now or until we come up with a really neat name we both like its just the "27" . you cant rush these things.

For those that believe it is bad luck to change a boats name. What about other ancient seafaring superstitions, such as. Never set sail on a Friday ! Never go to sea with a woman onboard !!! Any of you risked the wrath of the sea gods with those two?

I'm not putting my name to this message just in case the SGs are monitoring this subject.

Um....I remember making the choice to re-name our 22 to Kestrel. I went a full week without any mishaps. I thought that was pretty good. But, I will not relate what those mishaps/costs might have been nor did I make mention to Carole.

Currently touring the NW but will not be in Comox as earlier planned. We did stop in and met spent a couple of days with Martin and Andrea. Now I want to say these two are really nice folks and Martin has planned a good gathering. Have fun.... We shall meet at some point...maybe Lake Powell?

The best to all,

Mike
