GEOLOGICAL HAZARDS IN OREGON

Very interesting. I was looking at the list of hazards and the maps and was wandering what size earth quake it was representing? what size tsunami? I did not see a way to adjust the size of the event. Is there one?

Tom -

Perhaps this will work for you -- click on the site. Put in an Oregon street address. At the top of the window, it says Choose your Hazard Here - click that. A list of hazards comes up, and down near the bottom is earthquake. If you click the + sign to the left of earthquake, a list of seismic intensities shows up. You can then select the intensity (or intensities) you wish to simulate.

Hopefully this will work for you. Send a p.m.if this doesn't work. Best to you -- Bill

Good -- glad he'll be (sorta) high and dry. Being long-time Nevadans, we have learned that it's always good to know the odds -- and that the house ultimately wins.

It has been surprising to us to realize how many folks don't know the natural hazards in their home area (or areas where they vacation) -- and the odds of the hazards affecting them. One shouldn't be paranoid about hazard, simply aware and reflexively knowledgeable on how they should react to protect themselves or loved ones.

Been studying earthquakes here along the Front Range in Colorado -- and how we would be affected by quakes that have occurred here in the geologic past. It could be devastating, but a few preparatory steps (which we have taken) would greatly reduce the aftermath.

Today, we drove into the surrounding Rockies to check out the results on water levels of the drought here in the Rocky Mountain West -- Here along the Front Range we live in a semi-arid region, without enough water to sustain the population if the reservoirs along the continental divide (and western slope) run out. They are seriously down and long-term effects will be difficult unless the drought breaks.

Long-term climate change has disastrous short term effects such as Hurricane Sandy, but also, and perhaps more insidious, long-term resource and health problems that many are simply not following. Climate change deniers, who let ideology overrule their lack of science understanding, are not doing our society any service.

Hi, thanks for the web site. Please leave us deniers, as you so self righteously put it, the freedom of our own conclusions. thank you very much.

As we discuss natural/unnatural disasters....it is recommended that a contact person out of state be given to each family member so they can call that number if separated by disaster. Often times local numbers are not accessible but out-of-state (or out of the area) numbers are. Through this 3rd party number each family member can check in and know that they are all safe.....or not

I appreciate Bill's opinions and don't consider the point he was making as "self righteous". That's your opinion and you of course are entitled to your own conclusions. What people aren't entitled to (IMO) is their own facts. One of the biggest problems we face as a nation is that financial motivations often are used to create alternate realities in the media (both left and right wing) and the facts are frequently misrepresented. A little while back Bill posted this interesting link - http://www.scientificamerican.com/artic ... e-senators - about how NC legislators passed a bill banning state agencies from reporting that sea-level rise is accelerating even though research has shown that the coast between North Carolina and Massachusetts is experiencing the fastest sea-level rise in the world. While it's on thing to argue to cause and effect it's other thing to deny that the water level is rising and yet another to ban people from reporting the facts. The U.S. remains a strong country both economically and militarily at least partially because of our previous investments and confidence in science. As we move more and more towards a science phobic mentality in government, I fear for the long term outcome.
