I have a few small places which needed gel coat repair. We had discussed how to make the gel coat match not too long ago, and I suggested a little brown and a little yellow, with the white base.
Because I am mixing up small amounts, and have to match, I am using a clear gel coat paste. I first put out about half a teaspoon, and tinted it with white, so it was the opacity I needed, without going over 5% pigment. Next I put one drip of yellow in one side and one drop of brown pigment on the other side of the white paste. Slowly I began to mix, and immediately it was apparent it was too dark.
I then mixed a teaspoon of white on the bottom of another yogurt container, and added the minimal amount of the first white/ yellow/brown mixture. I don't have any way to quantify how much of the mixture I needed,--I was using popcicle sticks, and no more than a a few grains of rice size of the mixture was added to the white at a time. My best estimate is that a pea sized amount of the first mixture was a very close match. It kicked off, we put mylar sheeting over several areas, and then waxed paper over some very thin fills. I removed the films after about an hour and a half--It seemed fine, but I did spray some PVA mold release over a couple of of very thing scratches--and that kicked off fine also. We will sand and polish/wax as the final stage.
