Gas tank level, visually. Question

I have the type gas tank hold down panel that has NO view port slot. It is difficult to determine the fuel level in the tanks, even with my head in the bilge and using a flashlight. Before I get the router out and modifying the panels; does having this vertical view slot really allow one to see the level in the tank? I don't want to waste a lot of energy and time if this doesn't work.

We don't have the slots and I still may create some one day but so far what we have is working. I installed a battery operated light like this

above each tank with double sided Velcro and just reach through the slot between the panel and transom with a finger to turn them on or off. They light up the tank so I can just look at the side of the tank in the bilge area and clearly see the level. These add enough light so I can see them easily while filling in any light conditions. Works well enough so far that I have not done the slots and even then they might be helpful. Mine were 20 bucks for the pair from Costco with batteries and those batteries will last years the way we use them. They also stay dry under there so I think they will last quite some time.

Thanks you guys for quick replies. Another thing I love about this forum is the many different ways people address the same problem. It's a wealth of ideas.

I have a 1999 and the tanks are not the clear type, they are more opaque and very hard to see. I use a Coast HP 14 LED Flashlight which is VERY bright, and can see the level under most but not all lighting conditions.
