Has anyone played with or bought the new Garmin 740s? West Marine has them in a bundle with a 18HD Radar dome for $2599. I have been lusting over the Garmin 4008 but this seems like a pretty good deal. It's touch screen and extremely easy to use and fast. They also accept the v2 vision card which I understand there has been a recall on but the problem is now resolved. It doesn't allow radar overlay but does of course have split screen feature. Just wondering what the collective wisdom of the board thinks about this new unit. I did a search and haven't seen any information about this unit.
 
Anyone want a great deal on a full C80 set from my boat that I would love to replace with this garmin unit? Not really kidding.
 
Defender.com has the same deal as WM. I'm considering getting it now, without the radar, and adding the 18" HD radar later.

Order placed and shipping confirmation just received. 8)

So here's what I need input/opinions on. To mount the transducer and run the wire I plan to:
-drill oversized holes in the transom
-use the "Dr Bob technique" of filling the holes with epoxy/cabosil
-once hard, I'll re-drill the center of the mounting holes and use stainless screws to mount
-to run the wire, I plan to drill through the center of the epoxy
-open the exterior of the hole w/ counter sink bit
-push the wire through, and seal with 4200

Correct? Any consideration? I have the trim tab to contend with and it looks like it will have to be mounted inboard of it. Also, the boat is currently outfitted with the swim step/ladder on the starboard side, which I dislike; we have to step OVER the control cables, fuel line etc...stupid. I plan to move it to port and mount my future kicker on the starboard. What should I plan as regards how this will effect the transducer mount?

I'll then have to fish the wire through between the cockpit liner/hull, under/behind the head [liner], through the galley cabinet and up to the V-berth to the dash. The good thing is no exterior GPS antena needed so that's one less wire to run.

With the synthetic transom in your boat, the drill, dig out process isn't necessary. The hole for the transducer cable will probably be a 3/4" one to get the fitting through (maybe slightly smaller, as the Garmin plug is smaller than Furuno or Raymarine).
 
To put the cable through, go ABOVE the waterline to drill. No leaks, no worries if the seal isn't perfect. you might even find some other place to push it through.

Matt, I was under the impression the transom was plywood, perhaps mistakenly. :?

I was definately doing that, but your idea made me think I may be able to run it through with the control cables/fuel line etc. I'll have to look at THAT option. One less hole to drill would make me happy.
 
FYI there is an apparent issue w/ the new 700 series plotters and Garmin's HD radar. Quote the Garmin website:

There is a high probability of communication errors between the radar and the chartplotter when a GMR 18 HD radar or a GMR 24 HD radar is connected to a GPSMAP 700 series chartplotter. The system may operate normally for a period of time until a communication error occurs and “Radar Service Lost” is displayed on the GPSMAP 700 series chartplotter. The chartplotter continues to operate normally except that it cannot display radar data from the GMR 18 HD or GMR 24 HD.
A hardware upgrade to the radar is necessary to resolve this issue.

I have not ordered the radar yet and now I'm glad I couldn't afford it right now. :lol:
