Fishing in Sitka-Summer 2012

I'm thinking that I might want to do a salmon fishing trip to Alaska this summer, saltwater this time. I've been researching and talked to people from Sitka at the boat show and then saw this spectacular fishing trip on HawgQuest and thought, hmmm, this is something I might want to do.

In my research, it seems the rates are based on minimum of 4 people for the boat which made me think, it might be difficult to go by myself, wonder if I could round up 3 others to head up to Sitka this summer? Or at the very least, one other person. The rates I was quoted at the boat show were quite reasonable for 3 days, 4 nights. The advantage about Sitka is you're right out there near the open ocean where the salmon migrate plus you have a chance to catch halibut, lingcod and other bottom fish all in the same day. I'm thinking maybe the end of July, beginning of August to take advantage of the Coho run and maybe hook into a Chinook.

Anyone interested? This is just in the formative stage, nothing concrete, just curious to see if anyone would be interested. PM me. Also, other ideas welcome. If someone knows of a good place on the west side of Vancouver Island for instance, chime in.

Most charter operators can handle singles since they will combine you with other parties. They generally have a minimum number to run a trip. If you are flexible as to days, they can probably fit you in solo. If they can't, there are multiple charter operators in Sitka, just check and see who has a seat available on the day you want to go.

I've heard of a good place in Elfin Cove that glady accepts single guests all of the time & and & and.....offers excellent fishing on calm inside waters if that same ocean is blown up. :)

Ken, the choice between Elfin Cove & Sitka would sure be a no No BRAINER to me. There's no doubt good fishing about Sitka, but seemed to me every time we came or went from there either from the north or south it was endless charter boats blowing by in what seemed like endless wakes. Of course just the opposite at the Cove. Hope you have another good summer & would be great to see you thereabouts again

Peter, in my rounds of SE Alaska I saw one other Lodge & place I thought the equal or perhaps even better than Elfin Cove & that was the Laughing Raven Lodge at Port Alexander. Spent several days talking to the only two charter boat Captains there & watched them bring in the catch at the days end. Only draw back was the best fishing being a transit of Cape Ommaney every day.

Hello. I grew up in Sitka and live in Juneau now. We went out with a guide a few years ago who was wonderful. You may be able to hook up with another group.
Let me know if you would like any info on the guide.

Peter,

I saw the episode too. You do need to be out there on the freeway. Just not sure how my summer will be shaping up. May just be able to go out of Westport only on weekends.

Thanks guys (and gal) for the tips and ideas. I'm still keeping my options open but need to make a decision soon. I thought about Elfin Cove Ken, hey do you give C-Brat discounts? :wink

Hey Dwight, if you don't have to spend your summer in the Midwest, come up to Alaska.

Peter,

What's the ballpark figure to make the trip?
Hey Rick, I called a couple of places and the price includes 3 days of fishing. I PM'd the price to you. I can do the same for others if you PM me. That's for lodging, food (no dinner) a rental car and of course the boat and guided fishing. It doesn't include airfare which is about $500 + directly to Sitka. It would be cool to get four so that we can fill the boat with friends.

The one lodge I spoke to sounds like they're booking fast for late July to mid-August. I'm leaning towards that time period so we can get into a mess of Silvers with the occasional King. I'm sure there are still a lot of lodges with availability but booking fast. I'll keep looking over the weekend.

Also, if you change your mind and want to come up to Juneau for the silvers, we can take you out for free!! Had great fishing last year, not quite Sitka caliber, but limiting out 4 days in a row with 5 people on the boat isn't too bad!!
