Fishing gear for kids and newbies

Zebco push button is the best way, I've raised several kids starting with that, easy to play in the house with a plastic fish to get the hang of it. My 6 year old loves hers. The spinners are still too complex for her. When you go to the 1st spinner, get a "trigger" style that automatically loads the open bale and line in your finger. Then later to more complex.

As much as I love level winds for the kids for bigger fish, getting their finger caught and mashed by the gears will be a big set back. No matter what, you may have to dedicate some time to just helping them. I got my son to master Shimano Charter Specials for yellowtail, lever drag and level wind, but it took a few years. He still has trouble with high end spinners.

For salt water, a light water rinse followed by WD-40 does wonders

So someone please confirm my suspicion:
Zebco 202 reels aren't quite as robust as Zebco 33 reels.

Found my confirmation here:

Quote from one of the posters there:
"Been out with my 5 year old 3 times already this year, and his Zebco 202 which comes with many kids poles just don't cut it. I definitely plan to upgrade him to something decent like a 33."

That's what I needed to see...just some indication. So in hopes this helps somebody else in a similar predicament, here it is.

I have found tangle free reels can prevent unneeded heartache and misery and keep fishing fun for kids. As they get older and develop the motor skills necessary for more complex reels I would avoid spinning reels for the kidows. As for Dad it all depends on what your fishing for and how.... cast Vrs. trolling.
