Fishing at Alder Bay

I will be traveling to Alder Bay on Vancover island for two weeks in early August this year.

Mostly for the fishing and some cruising. It will be my first trip to the north end of the Island. I was hoping that some of you might share some of the "just got to do's" while I'm there.

Being a long time fisherman I understand most want to keep the better spots to themselves but looking for a good halibut location. Been planning this for about a year so I don't want to miss a thing why I'm there.

Any suggestions appreciated....

I have a side question. How do you capture and post screen shots form your ipad/ droid devices to post here on the brats or facebook?

It's one of the neat things the ipad does and does well. You hit the HOME key and ON/OFF key at the same time and it takes a screen shot of your ipad. It saves it to your pictures album. I than upload it to photobucket and copy and paste the link to my post. It takes about 1 minute to complete the whole process.

I use this often to take a screen shot and email it to friends showing my location when I'm in to some nice fish or have found a good location to stop at. A picture tells a thousand words as they say.

I am a very active member of facebook and have a private group created of devoted fisherman. Not many, but very devoted to fishing and enjoying life. I find using this function really helps in telling a story or presenting a special journey.

Hope this helps..............

This is a wonderful area. I recommend that you get to some of the outer marinas. I like Shawl Bay, and have done ok fishing in that area. They are known for their pancake breakfasts. Kwatsi Bay is a great spot, too. Loop over to Lagoon Cove for the shrimp boil. Jennis Bay used to do a nice pot luck. So many places, so little time.

How do I get on your friend list? :D

If you're dragging your boat up north and would like to stop for a day of ocean salmon fishing in Washington, let me know. August is a great time out of Westport. You can leave your boat parked and jump in mine for the day. If you stop to fish on your way up, you'll have some fresh fish for dinner right from the get go, plus some salmon belly for hali bait, and fresh carcass for crab bait. ;)

Great tip Hambone! I had no idea. It works great.

hambone,

I am assuming you mean Alert Bay since you're showing Malcom Island. We have trailered to this area 3 times now. Steve Jackman at the Port McNeill fuel dock has a fenced yard to store your truck and trailer. He's at 250-902-8128.

There's definitely lots to do in the Broughton area. I'd suggest the Broughtons cruising guide by Dreamspeaker as well as a Waggoner guide book.

I have logs of several of our visits there as well as photos in the Dreamer album. PM me if you want copies of the logs. I can't comment on the fishing but it's a cruising paradise! And, two weeks is not enough.

I spend the summers helping at Echo Bay Resort, if you get the chance stop by and say hello, my 22' C-Dory is in the back by the shop. There are way to many places to fish, crab and prawn.
If you are staying at Alder Bay. For Halibut you may enjoy running out and fishing the sides of Georges bank for Halibut, Lizard Point is excellent for springs.
I'm sure you will have fun.

Roger,

That was my first reaction too but then I took a closer look and Alder Bay Resort is on Vancouver Island just East of the Nimpkish River delta looking out to Pearse passage. Should have good access to all the salmon hot spots around Blackfish sound. Just follow the local boats :-) and hope it isn't too foggy.

C-ya.

Sorry for the confusion on the location. I marked Alder Bay with the red house. It's across from Alert Bay.

Thanks for the info everyone. I appreciate all the help. Wish I could stay longer than two weeks. Guess I will have to make more than one trip. Oh darn.

Heading to Pedder Bay resort on the south end of the island after that for two weeks. Really looking forward to the new water.

Thanks again for all the help
