Fish box..????

In my 22' Angler there is not a built in fish box as you all know. How do you deal with your fish while still fishing. When halibut fishing with 3 or 4 people it can really get out of hand quickly. It is not unusual to have 6 or 8 halibut from 20 to 100 lbs. Right now I either thump them on the head or put "hot lead" in their ear and run a line through the gills and tie them to a cleat.
Salmon are a bigger mess in the boat as they bleed badly and spew fish goo all over the boat.
What am I missing here? That is the only thing I do not like about my dory.
I tried putting the salmon in a tub in the cabin.......what a mess that was when one or two started doing the "I am outta here" dance. :?:

Jack, I've had the same problem and haven't actually done anything to correct it yet but I'm considering a box in the dingy. I'd have to pull in down off of the top and probably build some kind of box for it but I haven't had any other ideas. Any thoughts?

Jack- If the right persons see this thread, you'll be told about a collapsable type of fish sack that can be tied up to the back inside of the transom, or perhaps inside one or both gunnels (gun whales). You might try the search engine on this or the old C-Dog site using "Fish Box" and then "cooler" for starters. I think our Head Nerd, Bill (Da Nag), was in on the original discussion, as I recall. Help is on the way (BUT IT IS A THREE DAY WEEKEND). Joe.

I was intrigued by, and will probably still get one of the Canyon Products fish bags - these are the ones I've referenced in a few discussions.

Don't have one yet, so can't comment on quality or function.

I bought a fish body bag from www.boatersworld.com. It works good for Salmon, don't think it woud work so hot for a small fleet of large Halibut. It hangs across the the back of the cockpit and I no longer have to do the salmon dance around the big white cooler.

For that kind of load in an Angler there is only 1 solution that I have found...

Bomar Plastics 1801 comercial fish tote.
Here is mine with 400# of ice and 18 Albicore Tuna...

Mine is the modle with the feet for forklift use. It is a perfect working height.
Fish box capacity always seems to be an issue for me at one time or another during the summer. Especially Halibut and Tuna days.
Englunds marine supply sells the units and they can ship anywhere. They are a bit heavy though. You could always plan a fishing trip out here with me and pick one up ;)
 
I'm not hearing anyone suggest moving the batteries from the lazarettes to between the gas tanks; then using the lazarettes as fish boxes. Dumb idea to put the batteries in there anyway
 
My '87, 22 Angler came with a live well on the port side. I assumed it was stock, but maybe the guy added it. It's really to small to be any use, so I am in the process of adding another battery and locating it there.

I have a platform that I use to clean fish that fits over my transom. I put a big cooler up on it when I am fishing. Then take it down when I am running. You might be able to put something there that would be substantial enough to run with.

You might also mount a permanent cooler where the rod holders are. I know some people put propane lockers there.
 
Tom gave me this idea when he was visiting us in Hawaii and I liked it a lot. How about building a custom fishbox and mounting it on the transom. Mold something around the sides that wouldd completely block the opening of the transom, and use starboard for either the whole box or the lid. That way, you have a fishbox that solves the problem of taking water over the transom in a following sea and you hace a cleaning station and serving table on the top of the box.
 
We have a Canyon fish cooler bag. Got the one for Kings and it is huge. We haven't used it yet so can't really comment on how it works. Since we don't get the size fish we caught in Alaska, I wish we had bought a little smaller one.

The fish bags are good for salmon, Tom has one as well as numerous people in our fishing club. Also C Dory has the cooler rack that fits in the transom area, and holds a pretty big cooler. I 'm thinking about picking one up pretty soon. We will see.

Actually I've been wondering what to do about an ice chest. The fish bags seem like the perfect solution. For those that have them what size would be good for salmon?
 
The best fish box add on that I have seen in a c-dory is in brooks coopers boat. he made it out of fiberglass by using the boat for the mold. he sent me a e-mail telling me how he did it. I will be working on this next for the susan e. Iam in the middle of making storage areas and moving my radios right now. heres a pic of it

Check out my custom fish box I put in my splash well area. It's all fiberglass except the cutting board top, Coop's Cruiser :thup I did move my batteries between the fuel cells for more storage. Brooks
