We just returned from our first cruise with SeaSpray - CD22. We spent 17 nights onboard.
We picked up our boat from Les at EQ but had to wait another day because of a problem with the auto pilot.
On Saturday our first run was from EQ to Langley for the gathering. We got there just in time for the clam feed. It was great to meet everyone and see the boats.
Sunday was back to Deception Pass dock for the night. The next week was cruising the San Jaun and Gulf Islands. We had a great time and met up with Haley's Comet at Sucia and Tim and Peggy on a CD22 at Friday Harbor. We also visited Ganges, Montague, and Bedwell in Canada.
After Labor Day we went back to EQ for the breakin service on the engine and to meet up with some friends.
We met our friends at Anacortes where they chartered a 23ft Bayliner. Then it was off to cruise the San Jaun's some more.
We had pretty good weather but did have 2 to 3 days af strong winds.
One thing I quickly learned is how difficult it is to dock on the upwind side in a cross wind. Are there any tips for boat control in tight places with crosswinds?
On the last day we had a little excitment. It was rainy and SW winds were predicted. We went to Blakley marina for lunch and to evaluate the conditions befor crossing Rosario straight back to Anacortes.
After lunch it looked like the wind was calming down so we decided to try crossing. We headed out into the straight and it was not bad at all. Looking south towards the end of Cypress Island it looked okay so we headed south.
As we got closer to the end of Cypress it started to get rougher. And then we started to get gusts of 20 to 25 knot winds. These winds had been blocked furhter north.
Then it got really rough with about 4ft waves at about 45 deg off the bow.
( I still don't know why I did not think about turning around and going north and around the back of Cypress :crook )
Anyway, we had about 30 minutes of very rough going before we got far enough into the channel to Anacortes for it to get to mildly rough.
The harbor master at CapSante told me that in a flood and SW wind trhe water piles up against the south end of Cypress causing the waves that we encountered.
Overall we had a great time and really hated leaving and making the long drive home. Sure wish I could make more of the gatherings up north but until I can retire it will have to be yearly vacations.
