Fire at Everett boat launch

I have seen that boat out fishing a lot the last two years. I think that he is in my psa chapter. sound like it went up fast. How could a back fire on the outboard cause such a fire? must have been flooded and had a lot of fuel leaking out the carb?

It's an I/O boat, so backfire could start fire in engine room.

Hearing from a friend of mine that new the owner told me that the boat was just serviced. The owner of the trophy launch his boat started the motor then went to park his truck when he ran back the boat was on fire. They are still looking into what caused the fire.

The Everett Marina is the 2nd largest marina on the West Coast.
Another bit of information that most folks are not aware of, is that even though the Everett waterfront is "host" to the Everett Marina, the Everett U.S. Navy base, and a relatively small but expanding shipping port, the Everett Fire Department has not been able to secure a fire boat for its' waterfront. Since this fire was easily accessible by land based fire fighting equipment, this was not a problem.
