Yrs ago I bought an ACER slide scanner in a non-Ebay auction
I was planning to buy a Nikon but this was hundreds less and it works fine and came with a copy of Photoshop. Now I scan directly in Elements or Paint Shop. I am using Paint Shop and Picassa to organize
 
You will NOT be able to view your current hard drive 50 years from now for several reasons...
First, is that the harddrive is unlikely to mechanically work 50 years from now, too delicate...
Second, the magnetic information on the platter will weaken and become corrupted - the magnetic equivalent of rust...

I cannot access tapes I have from my Commodore and Apple I from the 70's because the hardware (computers) are long gone, or no longer work, and current operating systems of Windoze, etc. do not convert the digital stream on the tapes into coherent information... Also, the last time I looked some of the tapes had flaking of the magnetic oxide layer...
Kodachrome will last 50 years, but is going away as a medium to record new information because Kodak has stopped production...
The only permanent information storage system is cuneiform incising of clay tablets that are hardened in the sun.. Proven to last over 4000 years and easily another 100,000 years if kept dry...

OK, well I digress... But, if you put your photos on a harddrive and expect your great, great, grandchildren to see them, they will have to be transferred to a new harddrive every ten years or so - both for mechanical and magnetic reasons as well as keeping the images upgraded to the 'then' current electronic format... Luckily, the digital information can be copied endless times without losing information, unlike making a photocopy of a photocopy, etc..
 
for want it is worth, I use archival blank CD and DVD from Taiyo Yuden which they state data integrity is guaranteed to 100 years. I have Apple IIe for sale with monitor and software and I didnt buy a Commodore. I have lots of 5 1/4 floppies just sitting around. I have couple of drives but the new computers do not have floppy controllers builtin so if the need ever occurs, I will fire up the Northgate 386 and Dos 5

I pay 30 cents shipped per TY CD. They are also very flat and prints cleanly on my thermal ink Inscripta disk printer
