explosion in anacortes

Nope but according to the Seattle Times, it killed 4 and critically injured 3 others. This refinery in Anacortes has had a history of safety related issues and was fined last year for 17 different safety violations. This is a different refinery than the one that had 6 deaths due to an explosion in 1998 but you can bet that all refineries in the state will be looked at more closely due to ongoing safety issues.

My brother works for the BP refinery in Ferndale.

A few years back, I was talking about testing for a job at the Anacortes plant and he advised against it.

He said that the safety of the Anacortes refinery was poor, common knowledge at his plant.

A sad day for many folks out there.

While it may be true that the safety practices at the Anacortes refineries are sub-standard (I assume the investigations will reveal the extent) it is also true that refineries as a group are among the most dangerous places to work. Details in the Seattle Times today.

Someone asked me if I heard the explosion. I was in bed at the time, I think, but one of the county commissioners lives near the refinery and he did not hear the explosion either, due to the high winds at the time.

I am sad for the families in my community who are affected by this tragedy. As far as I know, I have no connection to any of the dead or injured.
