Enough room to sleep 2?? Ranger 21 ec

I have a wife and a little boy.... would the ranger cab be large enough for a weekend family get away??? Or would a 22' cruiser fit our needs a little better???
 
For overnighters, the 22 would suit you much better. The R21 has a v-berth but not a convertible dinette and the cabin is a bit small. The CD 22 has the v-berth + a convertible dinette. It will sleep 3 quite well, especially if the 3rd one is not too large (e.g. over about 5' 10"). The only downside is that you can't eat at the table while the kid is sleeping on the converted dinette. Not a big issue when the kid is little but when they hit the teenage years, they're harder to get up at a decent time.
 
As much as I love my R21-EC, sleeping arrangements are definitely a two person operation only. We find room for our 4 pound chihuahua, but that's about the limit, I'm afraid!
 
A friend has the 21R..i have a 22'c dory.
I'd say the 22 gives more for the family..I have had two in the V berth, one in the dinette bunk...6'..said i isn't bad..and one (summer)stretched across the rear seat (i added that)..that was a child. Only problem is the dinette sleeper has to be an early riser so whoever is the coffee person can get to work...

The dinette berth on the CD-22 Cruiser is easily long enough to sleep a 6-footer, like me.

I actually prefer sleeping there to the v-berth because of the difficulty of getting into the v-berth with my arthritis and bad back.

It's a great place for one person of up to about 6' 2".

I added a rope rail down the side of the berth to keep me from rolling into the aisle. Not everyone would need this, however.

Having owned both a C-Dory 22 and a Ranger 21-EC I would have to agree that the 22 comes ready to accommodate three people easily, but with a little creativity the 21-EC can be modified to sleep more. I have added a full camper back and then made a removable berth from starboard that rests on the engine box and butts up to the rear bench seat. When not it use it hangs from web slings under the top frame. This was done to accommodate my 6'2" brother. I'm sure there are other possibilities.

Jim, I have been wondering about the elevation of the 21's engine box relative to the back seating. I can assume from this they are at the same level?
 
No they are not at the same level. The engine box is lower than the rear bench seat but with the factory pad on top of the engine box they are pretty close. Part of the portable berth I made sits on the engine box with the pad and the other end butts up to the rear bench seat and has two removable legs for support.

Another thing to think about when making a choice between the 21 and the 22 is your young son will probably enjoy water sports at some point such as tubing, wake boarding or sking. The tug really doesn't have enough speed to do this. On the other hand the economy of it sure is something to think about.
