Might want to check out the Android application that alerts one to earthquakes based on your location, and magnitude. It also vibrates to indicate magnitude of quake. [as if the shaking outside isn't enough - there will be shaking in my pocket.]

Seriously application on Android market = Earthquake.

Jim, Sounds interesting. I went to earthquake in the Android market and found 112 apps! Which one are you talking about?

Sorry for the delay in response - been immersed in work.

I am using Earthquake by Reto Meier.
reviews vary - there have been some recent forced closed reports by others, but it works fine in my EVO.
I don't leave GPS on due to battery concerns - it has links to USGS data.

I think I will ask the developer to allow us to input GPS coordinates for our usual location w an adjustable radius - so that we could save battery and not need GPS on all the time just to pick up quakes relevant to us.
