Early 80’s Boats( classic 22) GROSS weight

Hey everyone!
A chance to upgrade my trailer has come up. And it’s got me asking questions like” what is the actual gross weight of my boat?” Mine is an 84 c-dory classic.
The bottom is FLAT. I run a 2010 etec ( 2stroke) 90 horse and a mercury 8 hp kicker.
I noticed some great posts about the weight of younger boats. Just wondering if mine is a bit lighter or a bit heavier?
Any ideas?

Your 1984 should be on the lighter side if things. If I were buying a new trailer, it would be a tandem with 4,000 to 4,500 pound hauling capacity to give me some reserve to play with.

This is from an early '90's brochure, but I think the weight specs are probably in the ballpark for your purposes.

My 85 with 90hp. 2 stroke (290lbs) 9.5 kicker misc. Fishing gear, 20gal. Gas with 2 wheel steel trailer on the scale 4000#.

I think it is of the general consensus that C-Dory may have published a little too optimistic of weights for the 22 cruiser. Others have said they lied....

We did fine with a single axle trailer with our 1983 Classic. Pulled by a Toyota Sequoia.

To be safe get a 5000# capacity trailer (not total weight of trailer and boat, but carrying capacity of the boat).

If you are not going long distances single axle may work well. We have had one single axle and the pole tongue broke on a cross country trip= new dual axle trailer. It is safer with the two axles.

I know that better than about anyone - been nursing my single axle trailer for around 20 years. I'd never replace it with another single axle trailer since the boat ramp is 100 miles away from the house. If it were right down the street, it would be just fine.

It is pretty general knowledge that the factory and thus the C-Dory brochures weights are on the very light side of reality. Has been for a very long time.

A trailer for a 22 should have carry capacity of 5000 pounds to give a slight margin of safety.

Thanks Very much for a lot of great wisdom on this subject. I do want to go on adventures with more than an empty boat, and therefore will be beefing up the original trailer or just starting over and upgrading.

My '84 Classic came with a single axle Pacific trailer. I moved the axle back and bought another axle to make it a tandem. The new axle was without brakes. I added the second axle because I was taking the boat all the way to Cabo San Lucas, Baja Mexico. I made this trip a number of times without any problems.

Both of my trailers have been "Pacific" and they are well built, sturdy and it is a super company to deal with. The second trailer was purchased because it was a tandem axle. I lowered the bunks on that one and love it. Both galvanized.
