I saw the post on E-tec reliability and thought I would put up some fuel figures from our 850 mile canal trip this summer. We started at Illion, NY, with assistance from Rich and Kay, motored west to Lake Ontario, crossed at Oswego, did the Rideau canal, St. Lawrence seaway, Lake Champlain, and back to Illion. With some back tracking and side trips we did over 900 miles.
All but one hour of the trip was done at 1500-1600 rpm at an average of 6.5 mph.
The hour was run at high speed to escape freighters, make a lock, and clear the motor a few times. This was accounted for in my calculations.
Fuel burn was between .9 and 1.1 gal per hour which gave us slightly over 6 mpg.
Higher speeds get about 2 mpg no matter the speed.
Not bad for cruising!
