i had a single axel trailer and experienced zero problems with it. generally the single has a larger tire than the double axel, so weight wasn't an issue. always packed a spear. with the 2 axel, double the tire replacement cost, as well as maintenance.
1500 for a good trailer sounds cheap to me.
