Do people here read Soundings magazine?

I'm a newbie to boating, but quickly got discouraged reading the standard magazines available at the newsstand.

BUT, I recently discovered Soundings...

Kind of refreshing, in a way, but I quickly came to the conclusion that the audience was way more affluent than I could ever expect to be. Still better oriented than the typical rags, and a good website, too. Cheap by subscription, expensive at the newsstand...I will probably subscribe, though, even knowing that it's a club I can never join...

I liked the fact that it is regionalized, and enjoyed reading about stuff in the Nor' East rather than PNW, for example.

Boats and wealth seem to be closely bonded, perhaps less so here at c-brats.

It's tough finding a magazine tailored to what you want to see in one. I have thumbed through copies of Soundings but haven't subscribed. A couple that I do subscribe to and enjoy reading are "Trailer Boats" and "Heartland Boating". I'm also from upstate NY and "Heartland Boating" being geared mostly to the eastern side of the country provides a lot of stories of people and places that I am more likely to visit with our C-Dory some day. Both magazines have web sites if you are not already familiar with them.

I have also been seduced by the http://www.workingwaterfront.com/ website, after spending time in Deer Isle, ME.

But so far, this is all vicarious...

We subscribe to just one boating magazine "Pacific Yachting" a Canadian magazine the focuses on the Pacific NW and British Columbia. Patti and both read it cover to cover. No bounteous bouncing babes, just good articles on cruising, safety, equipment, etc. A sampling from two issues picked at random: "Fall decommissioning, Late Season Cruising in the Broughtons, Getting the Most From Your VHF, How to Build the Perfect Boater's Toolbox". It is not cheap but we really find it worthwhile. Maybe the publisher does an Eastern edition?

All,

Just noticed that Lakeland boating magazine has an online article on trailerable trawlers. Looks like the article includes the R29. The online magazine is free at lakelandboating.com. I saw it on my iPad which doesn't have flash so I couldn't read it. I will need to check it out on my real computer....

I have subscribed to Soundings for a few years. I'm not part of the affluent club, but I find the magazine to be a treasure chest of useful articles. I subscribe to a lot of boating magazines, but I enjoy Soundings the most.

Hi Folks,

SOUNDINGS is one of the BEST out there. I also read MESSING ABOUT IN BOATS which has a great column about all the disasters in boating worldwide. ENSIGN, the magazine for USPS is also good.

All the rest seam to be catalogues for boating. Don't tell anybody, but when my wife goes shopping, I go to the magazine section of Barnes/Noble and pull down all the boating magazines, and read them. If an article really hits me, I buy it. I also take notes on interesting things. Total cost is a cup of Starbucks coffee.

I also read boating magazines in the local librarys.

Still A Cheap Yankee.

I read Soundings whenever I come out for the SBS. Take it back East on the plane and read it thoroughly... Hopefully next January will be the next time!

The February 2010 issue of Soundings has an article on p. 23 written by my youngest brother detailing his experience replacing the teak decks on his Tayana 42 trawler with fiberglass. Oldest brother was much impressed.

Joe has subscribed to Soundings Magazine for several years now. It's one of his favorite magazines. Every year he chooses a different friend to receive a one year gift subscription. One year without notice Soundings sent Joe a cap to show their appreciation :thup

In the same vein, I subscribe to BC Outdoors' Sport Fishing. I like reading the Canadian perspective on things and appreciate the more laid-back attitudes. After reading about the Canadian sport fishers' battles with their version of the WDFW I think we at least have a moderate influence on the allocation process. It appears to me that the Canadians' is totally dominated by the commercial fishing interests.
