My brother-in-law is building a 23.5' boat similar to the C-Dory. He is planning to power it with twin 40s or 50s. He is asking for info on the distance needed between the motors, to prevent (or minimize) cavitation. Any info or advice would be welcome! Thanks.

Depends on the type of transom, whether (or nor) he plans on trim tabs and or hydraulic steering. Ordinarily I'd say "as far apart as possible" for maneuverability but the answers to the above questions will probably dictate an answer.

The Honda 40s on our '05 are on 25" centers.
Do tell, what design is the BIL building?

Wayne, I'm away from the boat & will be for awhile longer, but will give you my distances when I return.

I'm with Charlie, As far apart as possible. If he is building it, he may be able to do some adjusting. I would only leave room for the trim tabs outside of the outboards. Set up a place for the sounder transducer as a shoot through on the hull, 2/3 of the way up from the transom if possible.

I'm not with the boat right now, but I would say mine are about 26 on center. they could have been wider than they are.

Depending on the deadrise he may not have much choice.
