Deadliest Catch Special tribute to Phil

Tuesday night, July l3. Tonight is the final episode of 2009 season, and it is a 2 hour special tribute to Phil Harris, captain of the Cornelia Marie. Not sure how I got stuck watching this program except it had big boats, in big water, and incredible on location photography. But over the last 3 seasons, it has been a regular Tuesday night event for us. Sad to see the loss of a family patriarch, but it, along with many other episodes, are reminders of how fragile our lives are and how our future depends on making the correct decision at the time, often in a split second or less.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, crew and friends of Captain Phil.

Looks like I jumped the gun on part of this. There is a 2 hour special next week, 7/20, on Discovery Channel.

It was a good memorial, and was a good man.

Harvey, it is also a regular TV watch by me, although, I don't really know why. there is something very compelling about it and it's not the crabbing. Meredith will watch it, but is not "addicted" to it as I am.

Last night's episode was very touching, especially when Phil had private conversations w/ each of his sons. When he apologized to Joshua for not being a "good father", I could only imagine he must have known his time was drawing near. I was sad, compelling and quite tender, all at the same time. Although to regret something so giant in scope...I can only imagine. I'm impressed with Joshua's compassion, maturity, take-charge mentality and empathy, even for his brother. Jake, to me, seems like a spoiled little turd.

We saw Phil quite accidentally once; he lives in a park (trailer) not far from us, east on SR 92. Our neighbors own a parcel there that we have used in the past. One day we were leaving after spending a night, and who should we see, but Phil riding in a golf cart and smoking a cig.

I honked and waved and he shot us a huge smile and waived back, even though he wouldn't know us from the man on the moon. I get the impression he was like that to/with every one.

Mary and I met him several years ago along with his retired crabber friend Captain Larry at a local boat show where they were featured in the "Discovery Channel" promo booth. It was early in the series and the booth was ignored the whole time we were there. We spent almost 20 minutes chatting with them. Mary's son is a commercial fisherman and I gotta agree with you. He and Larry warmly welcomed her like family into the booth where I took photos of them all together. Because of her son, watching the show started out very personal. That small personal glimpse has made these last few shows even harder for her to take.

OBTW, yesterday her son called on his sat phone to share the fact that they had just caught a bluefin tuna weighing an estimated 800 lbs yesterday and it dressed out at around 650 lbs. In 25 years of fishing for swords and tuna around the Grand Banks, it's the largest fish he's ever pulled in. That one fish will more than pay for the entire trip if they can deliver it in pristine condition. (I shared that here 'cause I don't know anyone else who gives a d*** about the fishing industry.)

Back to the show: Discovery is also continuing with their east coast "Swords, life on the line" series but it isn't quite as real as the Bering Sea version. At least one of the boats was leased by Discovery, then a hand picked crew with Linda Greenlaw as the captain took it over for the season. It'll be featured in the 2010 season shows.
