Cruising Wiki Shoot-Out #1

OK, I recently visited Port Townsend, and during that trip I encountered an undocument hazard-to-navigation. Just the sort of thing for one of them newfangled "cruising wikis".

Currently, there are at least four cruising wikis. My full report is at Navagear, but here are the summarized results:

  • ActiveCaptain: success. Currently, ActiveCaptain remains the best of the bunch. They’ve got some momentum with the content, but I think they could really pull ahead with some interface tweaks.
  • MyCruisingLog.com: success. This was the easiest to edit, because it uses the familiar Wikipedia wiki engine. Actually, all but ActiveCaptain use this software, but MyCruisingLog was the only one that both had a place appropriate for my warning, and allowed me to edit and save it.
  • CaptainWiki: failure. I found an entry for Port Townsend, I made my change, and I saved it. Only it didn’t save, because "A database query syntax error has occurred."
  • CruiserLog.com: failure. There wasn’t any entry on Port Townsend or even Admiralty Inlet or the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and I didn’t feel like writing a whole article from scratch. I just wanted to add a quick note about a temporary hazard to navigation.

Very cool! I just added an entry for Matia Cove...

Pat, have you explored that tiny little cove on the south face of Matia? I haven't seen it in person, and I keep wondering if it's big enough to fit a C-dory in, potentially.

Indeed, we have been anchoring there for five years.

In January 2005, when Daydream and Anna Leigh were both CD22s:

And this past summer with R-Matey and Halcyon:

It is one of our two or three favorite anchorages anywhere.

Uh, what I meant to say was that this is a lousy anchorage, lots of weeds and your anchor probably wouldn't hold anyway, you should really go over to Sucia instead, this little cove is really terrible and not worth a second look... :wink

Pat-

Is THIS the place?

I think the Bayliner guys have it tied up this weekend!

Wanna go to a LOUD PARTY?

Seriously, is this the cove on the Northwest side of the island or the one on the Southeast side ? (Can't tell from the satellite photo.)

Just curious!

That is the spot in the pic - drats! It is on the southeast corner more or less.
