Cruising to Cuttyhunk

We are planning a cruise from Onset, MA to Cuttyhunk and back on Sunday, the 16th aboard our 22 foot cruiser. We've never been but have found a good bit of info online about the island. What I'm not sure about is whether we can pull into the pond and drop anchor in shallow water and wade in. Anything we should know about that or about the route? It looks pretty simple and right now the forecast is for clear skies, seas of less than one foot and SW winds of 5 to 10 knots.

Thanks for any tips you seasoned New England cruisers can give!

I have not been to Cuttyhunk in a couple of years and never aboard my C-Dory. There used to be a small part of the inner harbor where you could anchor although such space was very limited. Something makes me think that this area was located where it would not be possible to wade ashore conveniently. What I would do when I get there is to seek out the Harbormaster and ask him. The problem with wading ashore in the outside anchorage is that you are located on the wrong side of the harbor entrance from the town with limited ability to get to town. If you do find that it is OK to anchor along the edge of the harbor in an area that allows wading ashore, it might make sense to have a second anchor so that you can hold the boat in position even if the wind or tide changes.

Have fun.

It has been on my to-cruise list for sometime. Please post a trip report! I have been out to Block Island several times over the years but not yet to Cuttyhunk.

I believe the inner harbor area that would be attractive for anchoring and wading ashore is reserved for the seaplane service...but you can ask the harbormaster. Great place but watch out for the deer ticks on the island.
