Crossing Lake Michigan

Living in WI. and having friends in Michigan, I have been looking into a possible lake trip from Manitowoc to Ludington. I know the ferry runs from these ports as well. Question is, has anyone done this in a 22 crusier? And does anyone know of a place to store the truck and trailer while on this trip?

Check out Pat and Mary Fowles thread, "Cosmic-C is on the great loop at last". They made the reverse trip from Ludington to Port Washington in their CD 25 last August.

Manitowoc would put you about 60 miles from Ludington and if you pick your weather, you should have no problem.

The municipal marina in Manitowoc is a great facility. They have launch ramps and you could probably arrange to leave you trailer right there.

Ludington has two exceptional marinas, one public, one private. I have crossed the lake several times, four times in my CD22. With the 22 it has taken between three and six hours to cross depending on wind and waves. Sturgeon Bay to Frankfort would be your very shortest crossing. A great cruise would be to combine cruising Door County/Green Bay, a crossing from Rock Island to Traverse Bay and its several marinas and destinations. That crossing would be 70-75 miles of open water instead of 55 at Ludington and under 50 at Frankfort. Some days you absolutely can't go, so you should save an ample time window. I wrote some about a trip I did last June elsewhere on this site.

Mark

We'll never forget a night crossing of the southern end of the lake -- from MI to Chicago. We watched the lights of the city slowly emerge from the blackness of the lake as we rounded Earth's curvature -- what a magic night. BUT -- only to be done in calm weather, we sure agree
