Cockpit floor

Hopefully not water....there is a void there for most boats. Many have cut inspection ports to get water out, when it leaked in.
 
It seems to me the space under the cockpit floor is a waste of space. I would think this space would make a good fish hold or cooler space. Always a good idea to keep extra weight low in the boat.
Simplicity is prerequisite for reliability!

We had a 1999 22 cruiser and it had the optional factory floorboards. These served to level the cockpit floor as the hull has a shallow "V" in it. As you are able to remove these floorboards, you can see that there is, at the most,
2 inches of space at the deepest part of the "V" tapering off towards the sides.
I don't believe that the newer ones would have raised the cockpit floor much more than that. So my thinking is that there is negligible wasted space under there and it would be too small for any practical use.

On my 05 22 Cruiser, what's under the floor (cockpit sole) is water. Yup. That's it, unless you count the two layers of gel coat, the balsa core and the fiberglass that make up about 2" of what it takes to keep my feet dry. The "unlevel" floor has never been an issue for me. (Typically, whatever part you are standing on is going to be the level part.) Adding something to make it level also adds (extra) weight aft, where I don't need it.

But then, I don't set a chair back there that has a drink holder with a full glass of anything, so I guess the spill factor is not a concern, and if it is, you might want to remember.... you are on a boat, it ain't rock solid unless it is grounded, and then you might as well be in a house. :lol:

OR, maybe your boat is so big it doesn't rock with the waves. :mrgreen: :roll:
