clean your computer out

Our computer is a few years old. It started making some odd, loud, noises last week. After a little internet investigation regarding odd computer noises, I was lead to believe the power supply was having dificulties. Sooo, I drug the machine out to the garrage and kicked the poo out of it....no...actually I opened it up and blew out about five pounds of dust, crud, bird nests and old sandwiches...lots of dust. The machine sounds almost normal again.

lesson learned- open your machine up every now and then and clean it out. We have a Dell, the back of the thing is hinged and opens just like a book
 
Ken – don’t know where you keep your computer, but the floor is absolutely the worst place for it. It acts as a vacuum cleaner and sucks up all kind of dust and debris. If you have to put it on the floor put something under it, to raise it at least two inches off the floor (three is better) and you will cut down on the vacuum effect by more than 70%.

it sits on top of a two drawer file cabinet....poor thing has just been neglected for several years. I was suprised at how much dust was in there. The house usually sports the "not lived in" look and I change the furnace filters regularly so it's not like we're total slobs around here. It just never occured to me to clean the thing out, I hope it lives a few more years and isn't permanently damaged
 
Ken - OK, your PC is dying, do yourself a favor and get a Mac!!!!
 
Two questions-
is the Mac better than MS equiped computers :)
When our computer dies, can we burry it in the Bahamas without a court battle :)

Yes, but you must take it there in person to avoid delays. :wink
 
oh man, I'd like to take it there in person but we're saving our travel budget for another cheesburger run :)

1 - Yes.

2 - No, it will have to be enbalmed while the lawyers figure out where it gets buried.
 
Mt answer to tricky leagal and political questions is

"Just don't ask. Instead act on your own before anyone else can interfere." If you get caught, claim you are a practicing Libertarian.

Following this dictum, you take your DOA computer on board a cheap redeye flight to the Bahamas in a plain brown paper bag as carry on luggage, and then bury it yourself in the beach sand.

Don't be tempted to vaccum the motherboard, though. The static
on the end of the hose could damage it. You can vaccum the
power supply fan area, but just be careful with the possible static
discharge.

OEM power supplies are inexpensive and can fail.
You might check the hard drive, too. Any error messages? Did you run defrag amd error checking under Properties for the C:\
 
Computers are vacumes, they suck the dust out of the air very well. The floor is the worse place to put them but no matter where you have it it will clog up. You should open up the case at least once a year and blow it out with one of those compressed airasol cans you get at the store. Don't use anything stronger as there are little plastic jumpers around an 1/8" in size all over the mother board that can be easily blown off. These are at the heart of your computer setup and if dissloged will cause you computer to not boot. If you are not a geek they can be very hard to track down where they go back. The sound most often comes from the fans as they gather dust on the blades and this needs to be brushed off with a small brush. The fans are also very cheap, most don't have bearings and fail within a year or two making noise when the computers first boot up and get quiter as they warm up. Replace them when they start making noise before you have heat damage. Buy the ones that have bearings as they only cost a few more dollars. When done cleaning restart your machine with the cover off so you can check to make sure all fans are working and see if any are still making noise.
 
good point. Be careful using compressed air and have a copy of the motherboard layout,

Many Pc's have multiple fans: case, power supply, ram, video card and can make noise.
 
I'm not getting any error messages & the thing seems to be running good now.....lucky thing it sounds like as I just fired up the Binford 5000 air compressor and blasted away....at a reduced psi
