Charging system problem

Sunbeam...your recollection is correct...the replacement rectifier is twice as big.

Due to the fact that the seller has offered to cover 1/2 the cost of the new R/R, I plan to get the newer version rather consider the used one.

Was there a fit problem with the larger deminsions of your replacement unit? I assume the heat sink attaches to the original mount with the same 2 small bolts. Is the new unit taller or wider?

In case Chris doesn't get back right away (I'm not sure if he hounds the forum like some of us do :D).... while I don't know for sure, he and I did talk about this at Powell (we were discussing our similar engines), and I said hmm, replacing it prophylactically might be a good idea (saving the working original for a spare), and he concurred and nothing was mentioned about modifications being needed to make it fit. In fact I think he may even have replaced his on a dock in Alaska (or similar situation). It seems like something he would have mentioned if it were necessary (of course he has an F75 also).

I realize this is only "half info," but just mention it in case you were eager to get it ordered and it might help. Thanks for keeping the thread updated - great to have more F80 (F75) info here.

I have twin F80's. Back 3 yrs ago or so the rectifier assy blew out on one engine at a VERY wrong time -- middle of a 20 mi crossing, 9pm at night, 3-4ft waves, 15 knots wind, family on board. My second engine got us back very well with radar and all instruments working fine.

The replacement rectifier (yes about $240) is much beefier, fits in same location, no problem.

As long as we are on the topic, let me just say "thank you!" for the helpful material in your albums. I really appreciated your photo-tutorial when I put the Permatrim on my F80 :thup Also, before I bought my boat, I searched for F80 info here and found some of your posts with comments on your engines. Again, very useful, so thanks!

One of the new/beefy rectifiers is looking more and more attractive - and with the advantage of having my current one as a working spare (if I don't wait for it to fail).

PS: Just curious: Are your F80's 2002 models (like mine)? I'm guessing yes as I think it became the F75 in 2003 - or did they perhaps sell both for a time (?)

Thank you for this info. After everything else I would hate to have had a R/R enroute that would not fit where it is intended to go.
