(Had a good time at the Martina McBride concert last night at the Santa Barbara Bowl- maybe I'm just feeling my age)

Glad to hear that it was a good time! We have tickets for her concert in Everett on July 16. (So, we'll be heading to the concert after the C-Brat Gathering in Bellingham.........should be a FANTASTIC weekend! :smilep )

It doesn't look like I will be able to join you guys on the trip :cry . It has been kinda hectic here with the kids and with me out of town. Have fun and be safe.

Roger, sorry to hear about your cold, hope you can shake it, if not, no worries, got all summer. I got a cold too about 2 1/2 weeks ago, a real doozy, sore throat and ear aches for 4 full days, then went to my chest. Colds gone for 5 days now, but yesterday was the first day I could clear my ears. Miles is fine.

I'll go ahead and launch at Channel Islands, will be easier to stay together especially if you guys have to launch by trailer this time with the hoist down.

Ron, got your vm, just got home at 9:15pm from work, long day. Gotta do some last minute prep on the boat. Plan to be at the dock about 8:45am.

Sorry guys, feeling worse this morning. I'm gong to have to wimp out for this weekend :cry

DaveS- The Warren Brothers were a good warmup for the show. The first half, Martina did songs from her new album "Timeless"- A collection of "Timeless" Grand Ol' Opry songs. (During the break, I went down and got a beer, I heard a couple of young girls say"Now she's going to sing the songs that we know" Second half was some of her hits. A good time was had by all.

A 'quick' update on the Channel Islands Quickie that we had this weekend. 3 boats were scheduled to go: Islander, Fishtales and Dora~Jean. Saturday morning, Fishtales called in and said he was feeling even worse, won't be going. The outing then became the "Mini Channel Islands Quickie".

Islander and Dora~Jean went to the backside of Anacapa through moderate seas across the channel, Dora~Jean began to fish, Islander hung around for awhile then headed to Santa Cruz island to search overnight anchorages. Saw two of my cousins on their boat while at Anacapa, they came by to show me 2 halibut (1 was 44" long) and a sea bass, nice fish. I caught a 25 lb manta ray (or bat ray), a comerant (bird), a pelican, a seal and 1 legal Calico bass. Fishing wasn't particular hot for us...

About 3pm, Ron on Islander says he's packing it in, wind was up, seas lumpy, anchorages not great. The outing just became the "Uni-Channel Islands Quickie". My son and I discussed and decided to fish the rest of the day and come back just before dark. But about 5pm a strong wind hit us on the back side of Anacapa, sustained about 25 knots, decided that was it, we're head'n home. Seas were large, whitecaps, heavy wind, weather report didn't catch up for over an hour until next bouy reports. Got back safe, 1 etable fish in the box. Sunday was great, got lots of "to do's" done, boat cleaned, engine oils changed. Overall a good weekend, you know what they say, a bad day fishing better than.....

The weather seemed strange this weekend. The wind would be still, and the kick up big time. Then it would calm down.
It couldn't makle up its mind.

I went up to Santa Barbara yesterday to put the boat in the harbor for the July 4th festivities. Again no wind and hot and then it would howl. Meanwhile back at Oxnard cold and foggy!

But I still enjoyed getting out there with Steve on Saturday.

We will do an overnighter at Santa Cruz sometime this summer!

Ron, Steve- Thanks for the report.
I'll be heading next weekend for some diving with my son. Hope the weather is better--- hope I'm feeling better!! Still congested, but feeling better today.

Roger, if you have/had anything like I did, don't count on the ears being right for a couple more weeks. Mine clogged up again Saturday, don't think they would have cleared. Probably another week for me. Also the diving wouldn't have happened this weekend especially where you wanted to go, current was high, seas quite rough on the front side of the islands (unusual) and not that great on the backside. There were also large breakers rolling in on the backside if we were to dive close in to avoid the current. Visibility poor all over, not what you'd call 'diving conditions'.

Going to Catalina (Isthmus) next Saturday through Tuesday. Taking a friend of Miles' sister to celebrate her birthday -- hey, ANY excuse works for me. 5 on board, 4 days, should be fun! Enjoy your weekend diving.

Also, July 22 we signed up for the Sheriff's "Star Dive" at Avalon. Good cause (contribution) and diving for 'hidden treasure' off the Casino.

Steve,

A friend made it out for a dive on Sunday- here's his report;

"Santa Cruz Island Dive Report Sun6/25"

Quick hit the Island for a single tank out of CIH.

Strange conditions on the way out, fog, no fog, swell and wind was mixed.

Dropped the hook, stern ended up right over a favorite reef.

Suited up, wind changed direction, weather and seas became ominous looking, boat swung 180, now we had to swim into the reef. Girls on board said "don't go, it looks scary!".

Swam down anchor line, made sure we were set. 5 ft viz, murky.

At least I knew we would have an easy swim to the boat once we came up, right?

Played with a huge sheep crab.
Grabbed a good scallop with little air left, found a hole in the kelp and climbed the 5 stories back to reality.

150 yards from the boat, ahh, should be able to cruise with the wind to the boat....... but crap, the current swapped and it was a leg cramper all the way. Took 1/2 hour.

Scallop was great on deck, soy, wasabi.

Got waked a few times by idiots, but what the hell, that is expected right?

Can't wait to get out again!!
