CD25 Comparisons

There have been a few CD25's for sale and I am curious about changes for the different years.

I think the new version of the 25 was sold starting 2003. Can someone list what fixes/improvements have been made to the 25 since starting this new version?

Also there were some CD25s built sometime before 2003. How are these older 25s different from the newer ones? I don't think I have seen one of these older ones for sale yet.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

I ordered mine in April 2002, it came out of the mold July/Aug 2002 thus made the cut as a 2003 model (after July 1st). I think mine was about the 6th of the new ones since mine is s/n 013 and there were only 7 built in 1995 (I think that was the year). The primary difference was the earlier version didn't have a 360 deg view from inside the cabin. It had a closet that went to the ceiling, the bathroom also had solid walls and I think the backdoor had a much smaller window. Tyboo Mike has one of them, he will be able to add more detail.

Hi Steve -

The big difference in the new CD25s and the six they made back in '95-'96 is in the topsides. The older cabin has the door and aisle off center to starboard and uses the same size galley counter as the CD22. There is a hanging closet aft of the counter to fill the extra cabin length. On the port side is a large dinette that will seat four and sleep two comfortably. Behind that is the head compartment, which is also huge for a 25' boat. The interior fit and finish is a bit better in the older cabin. For instance, the exposed outer walls of the head compartment are gelcoated. Steve is right about not being able to see much out the back of the cabin. I thought at first it was going to be a big problem, but it isn't a big deal at all. The other big visible difference is the cabin roof. It is cored and about 3/4" thick. It does not have the distinctive C-Dory raised center section, which I think was born of the need to stiffen the CD roof so it did not need to be cored. The rooftop is very slightly curved side to side, and I could throw a party up there if I wanted to - complete with dancing.

It is my understanding that when C-Dory reintroduced the 25 they used the same mold for the hull as was used for mine. After two years (I think) they made a new mold with some very minor changes. Jeff explained what those were once, but they seemed so slight I don't even remember what they are.

I have only seen one of the original CD25s for sale, and I bought it. Another Steve on here (Stevej - Shearwater) has hull number 3 of the original run, and mine is hull number 6.

I really hope Mark Toland sees this and lends his knowledge and experience to the discussion. It would be cool to know where the the older Cruise Ship as they were called might be.

Thanks for more of the history Mike, I'm all ears. Something very nostalgic about these boats -- I want to know my boat's ROOTS! I envy you that yours has a 'real' 4-person dinette settee. Last year I mod'd mine to make it better for 4. I built a new table that's about 7" longer and installed pins and keepers to be able to reposition the fore and aft seats outward towards the isle about 6-7" thus utilizing the portion of the cushions that were hidden and useless under the outside walkway jog in the cabin. I'm still working on a better backrest cushion position for the aft seat.

Would love to hear more about the original vs newer 25 designs from owners or factory, great subject!

How about some pix of your dinette table / seat mods?

Two fairly small but significant improvements were made in the 2006 CD25 (we have the 2005, so don't have them). First, the self bailing cockpit scuppers are now larger and have a check valve. Second, the dinette table leg has been substantially improved - the one on ours is just not very good, and I definitely want to get the newer style table leg. I'm sure there are other changes that I am not aware of - they keep tweaking the boat.

Pat, thought you'd never ask!!! Actually, I work in very slow motion it seems, been thinking about getting pictures and posting for oh, maybe 6 months... Simple mods but took me 6 months prior of 'designing in my head' time before doing it. I'll get right on those pics.

Steve;
I have #75, built in 2005 and during the Lankford gGathering I saw the 2006 from a May delivery. The noted difference, as I remember it, is the head setup. I think I have a larger holding tank at abt 20gal., the one I toured , I think, only had 9gal. My holding tank is under the aft deck, behind the fuel tank. The newer head has smoother lines and seems bigger, as does the cockpit with its better drainage. There is also a molded step to the gunnels from the sole, good feature.

I think the factory also changed the wiper arms to the panagraphic(sp)[dual arm style] from the single arm. These may be an option; anyway I bought some at Boaters World to replace my singles after experiencing the Ches. Bay WX on that cruise from Va. Beach[ abt 500NM round trip].

There are some interior pix of Sea Angel on this site to give you an idea of the layouts for 2005. Of the 2 years noted, I'm glad I have the 2005.

So much for my 2cs..

Steve,
I don't have experience with older models of CD25s but I do have a 2006 model that was built this past summer. Some differences I have come up with from comparing documentation and posted photos are:

- the new head is manufactured by Sealand and the toliet sits directly on its 9 gal holding tank. I suspect this allows it to sit a little higher than older types as well as reduces the length of hose for pumping out. Again, I have no experience with older models but I do know this one pumps out pretty well.

- the 20 gal freshwater tank in located behind the fuel tank instead of in the bow.

- the transom battery compartment is enclosed and accessed through hatches, the cockpit side walls are enclosed as well. I look at photos from older models and these area are open.

Interestingly, that's my SAME opinion of my 2003! I really like the cosmetic features they've done with the cockpit and elsewhere on the newer models, plus the integral toilet unit rather than a separate, remote holding tank. However, those cockpit areas that are now enclosed (and look very nice) are very useful to me open. For example, my 3hp Yamaha dingy outboard fits like a glove up against the port side right behind the vertical fuel filler fiberglass enclosure, nice and secure. My ladder folds flat and fits across the back under the transom splash area, and so does my fishing net and gaff, etc. I feel I have more convertable space for irregular sized items.

As for the water tank, I have enough weight in the stern with twin outboards, glad it's up in the bow on mine. Plus I elected to have a porta potti which left the holding tank area (at the stern) empty without its additional weight also.

Yes, I drool when I see the newer CD25's, they're stunningly beautiful, but I still love mine because well, it's mine and has been mod'd to fit my uses and lifestyle. Still gives me goosebumps to step aboard, fire up the twins and give her some throttle. 8)
