I just waxed the boat. I have used Meguiar's wax on my truck with great results. Rubs and buffs easy with little wax residue powder. Well when I used it on the boat I have a very hard time getting it to rub off. Does anyone have a favorite wax recommendation?

HI CW, My best friend worked for Hendrick Racing in the 80's on the GTP Corvette. The body was fiberglass and they used "Super Glaze" http://www.waxshop.com/ . I've used it exclusively on Adeline since she was new and she still looks purdy. Easy on/easy off. Les Schwab carried it when I last looked.

I use Starbrite Liquid Teflon Boat Polish. Easy on, easy off, great shine. Used it on sailboats for at least 15 years. If the boat hasn't been waxed for a while, get the oxidation of first, of course. Joe.

Best wax I have found is the Collinite's No.885 Special Heavy Duty Fleetwax ( for Marine & Aeronautical finishes). It is a paste wax. They call it "The best wax on the water". The Collinite is available in liquid also but the paste wax (above) is rated much higher for durability and performance.

I'll see if I can find the article that rated a large number of liquid and paste waxes for marine applications. They had the Collinite #885 at the top of the list. When I locate the article I'll post either the source of the article itself.

I'm sure this wax is readilly available. I have gotten it from LFS Supply in Seattle and in Belllingham.

Not a wax but 303 Aerospace Protectant goes on easy. Spray it onto a soft cloth, wipe it onto your surface, then use a soft dry cloth to wipe it off. Some light buffing brings a luster to the surface. Do the entire boat in an hour. No white paste stuck in crevices and leaves a gleaming protective coating that lasts 4-6 weeks.

Powerboats Reports in Oct 2004 had the results of their wax test that was done over a year in New England, outdoor exposure. They took a permanent marker, put it on a gel coated surface, then waxed and put in sun for a year. They examened the fading on the inked part to determine how well the underlying gel coat was protected . The results were from best to least: Collinite 885 Fleetwax, Turtle paste wax, BoatLife paste, Meguiars Mirror Glaze (paste) Starbrite Paste, 3M paste, West Marine paste. Liquid waxes were all secondary to the pastes but two non-wax coatings did well too. They were Poli Glow Liquid plastic and West Marine's Teflon.

I have personally used Meguiars Mirror Glaze Mold release wax on my cars during my boat building days here in NY area, lots of salt during winter and had excellent results. I figured if it was good for releasing fiberglass hulls from a mold after being exposed to styrene and mekp in the polyester resin, how bad could it be for protecting the cars ? It is a bear to wipe off however and I have stopped putting this much effort into finish maintenance on the cars.

I used Meguiars Liquid Gold on my CD25 in November and will use it again after they turn the water on at the dock and I can wash the winter grime off the boat. I plan on waxing my boat surfaces more than once a year and the Meguiars liquid goes on and off easily. (it smells nice too)

Regards,
Peter

I'm a Collinite man too. I use their liquid although it's more like a runny paste to me. Takes a bit to get it off but it does leave a tough coating that lasts the whole summer season so I get to boat instead of clean. I like that.

WOW, so many choices. Makes me tired just thinkin about wax! I think I'll try to find the Collinite first. I don't get around to the waxing part much, so a long lasting shine sounds good.

ok, so I have been putting this off forever and really need to give Sea Lion some love and attention. I need to remove some oxidation, what should I use? I have a couple of buckets full of stuff that came with it back in the martini boat days. Nowdays it is lemon Joy and a scrub brush.
