Capstan Deck Winch

Has anyone out in C-brat land installed and used a capstan winch to pull their anchor???
There are several brands available, Endurance and Lewmar.
Are there any others.....good or bad.

Give me some info. please.

I am pulling 600' of 1/2" 3 strand nylon with 20' of 3/8" chain and a Bruce anchor. I know the chain can not be pulled over the capstan drum.

I am looking for another way to pull my anchor other than the ring/buoy pull with the boat method.

Thanks for any help.

I assume you don't mean the kind of capstan that the rode winds up on? Cuz I been there, done that, and if I remember correctly, you inquired about the windlass I had on the Tom Cat for a couple of years.

Warren,

No not a regular winch. A capstan is an open ended drum that you wind a wrap or two around to assist in pulling on a line. I used them a lot in the oilfield and they are really handy.

A regular winch is problematic with 600' of line and no way to guide it on w/o some kind of level wind set-up.

As I found out the hard way. :xnaughty

The Lewmar that I bought is available with a capstan but I could not see the utility. How would you use it differently than a standard windlass that feeds the rode into the chain locker? The mental image I have is of you on the foredeck using the capstan as a sailor would use a sheet winch or as a fisherman would use a crab pot puller.

Inquiring minds want to know.
