canvas bulkead changed out with solid bulkhead

I have been considering the idea of possibly changing out my canvas bulkhead with a solid bulkhead but was interested to know if anybody else has had to do that. The canvas isn't too bad and does keep the inside somewhat warm and the rain out but I would think a solid bulkhead would do much better. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

Funny you should bring up the subject. Sea Baby is being picked up today or tomorrow AM to have one put in.

Last summer I was by Mobile Marine East and Gene was in the process installing an electric winch in a 22-footer. He was also fiberglassing in a chainlocker bulkhead to keep the "heavenly" smell of wet line out of the v-berth. Part of his plan was to install a 2x4 ft hatch in the bulkhead in case work had to be performed on the winch or the anchor line/chain were to foul.

I liked the idea so much that Gene is going to do a similar bulkhead and hatch on Sea Baby. SB doesn't have a winch (YET) so the closed off area will serve as stowage for those extra PDFs we all have getting in the way. Also, having spent a couple c old NC nights on her last winter we found out first hand there was a big "draft" on the toes. Warmth is the driving force.

Will post photos as work progresses.

I think you are talking about a chain locker enclosure vs. Kevrangray talking about a solid cabin bulkhead. Pics below.

An enclosed bulkhead will make all the difference in the world...much more quiet in the cabin when traveling, more warmth on cool evenings and more security being able to lock up the cabin. A bulkhead on the 22 will be easier to install than on the 19CD. The upper half of the cabin bulkhead on the 19CD is 'raked' about 3-4 degrees forward. That's why we ended up with 'dutch doors'...the bulkhead had to be installed in two pieces. The bottom piece was glassed in but the upper half was installed with 5200. That baby isn't going anywhere. Unable to locate A grade marine plywood at that particuler time Joe used 'structural' grade marine plywood which served the purpose.
