Can I make my own sling slots?

I have a 2010 King trailer with bunks. Has anyone made their own sling slots? If so, what's the best way to make them?

I plan to launch at Cap Sante this weekend because I understand they can lift a 22 C-Dory without slots. But I would like to make some if practicle.

The problem is the load bearing areas in the bunks. You would need direct load bearing support on both sides of the desired spot where you would consider cutting the bunks to create a spot for the sling.
 
the slots on my bunks and most bunk trailers I have seen are not made from removing material but adding it. leave your current bunk in place and add a second layer or bunk on top of it minus the spots where you want the slots. So its two layers of bunks with slots in the top layer only. the sling operator will thread the straps thur the slots of the top layer. I will try to take a picture when the boat is off the trailer next.

What Tom said. I actually did this project a few years ago. I used 2 x 6 treated outdoor wood, covered with bunk carpet, and screwed them from underneath the original bunks with galvanized hex head screws (I think). It did raise the level of the boat by a couple of inches but it hasn't seemed to affect the towability of the boat. I don't think I took pictures but if you look at the King Trailer site under accessories, they have a picture of their sling bunks, made out of a plastic or rubber material. Yes it's a very easy project.

Great point! I was thinking in my terms of jack access points from the ground but of course with slings you can thread them through the holes cut out on the 2nd level.
 
On a King-

Remove the slick bunks, if so equipped.

Add a second 2x6 to the existing bunks, leaving a slot for the sling.

It is easiet to install the slick bunk material to the new 2x6 sections before installing them.

You may not need slots forward if enough room exists for a sling forward of the bunks.
