Camper Canvas for 16 Cruiser

I would like to install a camper canvas on my 16 foot cd cruiser. I know CD recommends King Marine Canvas and I understand they do a good job. However, can anyone suggest a more economical option? Local canvas people are not very interested in the project.

We made our own for our CD-22. Bought the material/thread/etc from Sailrite.com and used my mom's 1950's sew machine. Just need to take your time planning things out - sewing takes a bit, but not hard to do.

I recently had a king cavas made and they are a bit pricey, but a good canvas is well worth the investment IMO. And King has the templates and has done alot of CDorys, the install was pretty good, and the canvas itself is very nice quality. Someone also had a camper canvas that didn't use any hardware and was like a cross between a camper and a slant back mooring canvas, it was on a 16 and I thought it was a neat solution and has to be less $ without all the hardware.

King Made mine also. And, I also had the same problem with the locals here in Michigan. I'm born and raised here and still can't get over how F!@#*ng lazy some buisnesses and my neighbors are. I'm dealing with a contractor I've known for 15 years and can't get him to take my money to build an addition for me. If I have to wait any longer, I'm going to go to Home Depot and do it my self. :amgry Anyway, check out my photo album to see how mine looks. I'll have to send you a message when we are getting our 16 back on the water.
 
Hey Rich! Good luck in your search. Mine was a bit spendy on C-Byrd, a CD-18 Angler which has many of the same issues to work with as a 16. I loved the job we had done, and one of the best things I did was the support system was of the 1" larger framing. I had it made so you had two full opening sides, which made it much easier to get into/out of the boat at the docks. I also loved the support system at the aft edge of the roof line. This gave me some great hand holds to work with, and, the very forward edge was a clear insert that was removeable too. This worked great as to be able to stand in the cockpit and see forward over the lower roof of the boat. And, in the hotter summer months, I could take that forward section out, and on the hook, still get air flow into the cockpit. A bit over $3K when completed, but, I had it done. It for sure added much to the total use and enjoyment of the boat.... and I miss that boat more than any boat I have let someone else own after me.

$3000 :shock: Wow. King marine is about half of that, maybe a bit less. Byrdmans does look like it has great standing headroom all the way back, Although generally I like the more streamlined transition from cabin to canvas, but that is just aesthetics. I think it's hard for local shops to match Kings price as he just has them cut and installed, no measuring or designing work needed since he has the templates, although he was happy to make a few minor chnages for me. No matter who makes it, I still think canvas is one of the best additions to any Cdory. I love mine!

I thought King's quote was more than fair for a complete camper back for the TC. $2793! I had bids of $4300 in Port Townsend and $6100 in Seattle. It should be ready to install in a couple of weeks. They'll do the install at their shop in one day. Photos to follow.
 
Again... I did not have the smaller most often used frame materials, and, the roof was the Sunbrella II fabric, not the normal sunbrella, the clear was the best I could get, and, I had a few other once over custom things made at the same time, like a nice cover/tote bag for the Mossberg 12 Ga w/pistol grip...which makes it look like you are carrying a stadium chair, and a few other little tote bags. You know the drill... shoes, purse, handbag, canvas for the boat...they all match!!

The larger frame was for sure worth the extra bucks and glad I spent that money as when myself and my little buddy Roger Johnson SENSEI traveled on the boat together in some not so perfect conditions, we each caught ourselves a time or two on the frame work, and neither of us are small guys. Not sure the smaller frame work would have held... Now, as for the extra for the Sunbrella II faberic.... I like it for the Mossberg, but, not sure I would spend the extra for the roof material again. Just my thoughts.

Each time you do a single, custom piece job, and you say....and could you please..... it goes up a bit. In no way was this a cut from patterns job. Yes, it was spendy... but, as others will attest to, good work, good materials, and custom fit stuff just cost a bit more. And...it truly added a great deal of overall user friendly to the boat. And, there was a lot of time/labor in this job as it would have been if it would have been a 25-30 foot boat job. It is the labor that is high, as well as all the upgraded materials.
 
Hey richard01, if you would like to see the work that King does up close and how it would really look on a 16 cruiser, send me a message and you can stop by and see mine. I'm in Farmington Hills near 8 & Middlebelt. If you do go elsewhere to have it made, you can have a good idea of what you want to have made. Take some pictures and measurements. You might want different options to suit your personal needs. Screens, windows, flaps, designed for fishing or cruising. Or go the Byrdman option.
