C-Dory for Dummies - Manual for Marine Head

My 2006 25' Cruiser has a marine head operated by a pedal. I do not know how to use it, and there are no instructions in all of the manuals and papers I got with the boat. Can anyone describe how to operate and maintain the head or tell me how I can get an owner's manual for it?

A. Remove it.
B. Buy a Porta Potti

I have found the marine head more trouble than its worth. We don't have any pumpout facilities anywhere close, and my impression of macerators and pumps is they are problems waiting to happen. I had the rebuild the pump in mine once already. The porta potti is just too easy. Having dealt with one of them on a 22 for 5 years, pulling the marine head out of the 25 was an easy decision.

Does it have a holding tank built in to it? Our 07 has a Dometic w/ a 9 gallon tank built it. If so, basically, put a little water in the tank, add some RV odor control liquid and use RV paper. We use Thetford blue stuff from Wallyworld. When you push the pedal the flapper should open and the water pump will put some water in like a real "flush". Then, pump it out or macerate over board when you legally can. Keep the seal wet so it doesn't dry out and don't use any chlorine based cleaners.

Is it a Wilcox crittendan? If it is the pedal is pushed and a hand lever on the right side pumps water. To dry the bowl get off the pedal and pump till dry. They are a really beefy old time toilet. I am assuming the toilet is plumbed to a holding tank and then overboard or is it a deck pump out only? I know what I would do if it were mine, having lived with marine toilets for 30 years I have the finest one aboard Kerri On. Bulletproof porta potty. George :thup

Actually the name is Vacuflush. It uses fresh water for flushing, about 1 quart per flush. If you lift the foot pedal with your foot it adds more water to the bowl. Depressing the pedal will flush. It will sound and look like a toilet on a airliner. You need to let the pedal pop back so the ball valve will seal again. Then you will hear the vacuum generator pumping up a new vacuum for the next flush.

Dread, as you have learned, there are lots of types that may be installed. A picture would be helpful. If you don't have an album, post a picture somewhere on the 'net and link to it.

Otherwise, email me a picture and I'll post it for you.

The first thing to do is lower the lid on the head. That exposes the brand name: SeaLand Dometic.

But I was at home, and your replies saved a trip to the boat that I didn't have time for because I had to go to a day-long Bar Mitzva celebration. When I got to the website I was able to download the user's manual (now on the boat) call the manufacturer, learn the part number for the kit I needed, find a local dealer, and pick up the part two blocks off the freeway on the way to the party.

Thanks, once again.
