C Dory 19' Angler Engine replacement

Hello ,
My CDory 19' Angler was recently stolen from the Berkeley Marina in Berkeley, Ca. . Due to excellent investigative work on my part and no help from the Police or Marina ,I was able to recover the CDory and trailer but alas my 75HSP Honda Engine is gone forever. I'm contemplating replacing it with a new Honda 90 HSP quoted @ a cost of $9000 plus labor , tax , accessories equaling $11,700 OTD . Also it has been suggested that I convert to Hydrolic Steering for an additional Thousand $ .
Any advice would be appreciated in regards to cost and I'm really on the fence about converting to Hydrolic Steering.

Your suggestions would be appreciated .

Steve

I think you'll find just about anyone who has used hydraulic steering prefers it...that choice would be a no-brainer to me.

However, your new engine choice - personally, I'd give that more thought. Manufacturer debates are second only to twins vs. singles around here, but I've read enough about the injected Honda 90 here that would give me pause purchasing it for any C-Dory - but it definitely wouldn't be my first choice for a 19.

It's been pretty well established here that keeping the stern light as possible on the 19 is preferable. The new Yamaha 70 is only 257 lbs., and has had great reviews. Likewise, the E-Tec will come in significantly lighter than the Honda.

Not a Honda basher, by any means - in fact, that's all I have on both of my C-Dorys. Just don't think it's the best choice for a 19.

hydraulic is a no brainer, if you have the money, do it.

But, re-power, at least do some research on the E-tech engines before you commit to the Honda. The e-tech would make your boat scream down the water even if you saved some money going to a bit less horsepower. Fuel economy would be some better, and the hole shot torque is amazing on these engines. Weight savings on the transom too.

Just a thought from a guy who's owned Honda and Suzuki and e-tech. I'd re-power anything to e-tech in a heartbeat.

No, I have no financial or sales interest in e-tech. They are just a great motor for smaller craft.

I constantly fight the urge to steal the Yamaha F70 from our Lund and put it on our 19. Great motor and would save us 100lbs of stern weight.

A local Honda master tech I trust told me recently to wait for the next version of the 75 in a couple of years and did not recommend the current FI version over the carbed version we have now. He also thought the Yamaha 70 would be a good choice with the right prop.

*** DIGGING UP AN OLD THREAD *****

Cornfield,
What were the details of your boat theft?? This sounds like a crazy story. I absolutely can't stand thieves (my motorcycle was stolen a few years ago). Why didn't the marina help you? I can see the police being lazy and ineffective but the marina should've been on their hands and knees before you. That is ridiculous.

Thank God you at least got the boat back. Did the degenerate scum who stole it damage the transom when they took the outboard??

Amazing about your boat...and I have heard that before...cops just too busy with "important" things...

I sure would listen to everyone about the weight...Roger (C-Hawk) had a Honda 90 (new) that my twin ole Yamaha 40's would run away from...plus it was a gas hog...he finally had the Honda dealer take it off and sell it..he took his loss and installed twins...50's I think..(22' cruiser)

And you bet about the steering...I converted to a Baystar and later changed it over to a SeaStar... the seal on the BayStar started leaking so I sent it in to have it resealed...took so long I just bought another helm.. (22' cruiser)
