Hi all, Recently, C-Dog Fishwisher was the victim of a damaging break-in http://groups.msn.com/FishWishersHomePage/2500reward.msnw . As a result of his misfortune I resolved to research a security system for Adeline. As she is safely secured @ my home, this is intended as marina security. This thread is intended as a starting point and I hope others will add their thoughts.
1st, we presume that your boat has a 12 volt battery / charging system,
possibly supplied by your motor / engine. You need to have a constant 12
volt source for any alarm system to operate.

2nd, the DEI Merlin 2000 sports alarm is designed for many different uses
when moisture is a big factor.

From our years of experience, the Merlin 2000 is the # 1 choice for your
boat, and we do not have any # 2 recommendation.

You will probably want to turn the built-in shock sensor to its lowest
(almost off) setting, as the boat in mooring, bumping against anything
would set off the alarm. If it is supported entirely by lines, and cannot
hit a bumper, then you may be able to have the shock sensor set to some
appropriate level to detect intrusion.

3rd, you can certainly use a magnetic separation switch on the cabin door,
as long as you have a place to mount it on the door frame and door
opening. Probably the DEI 8600 pre-wires switch would work best.

4th, the Merlin comes with a waterproof key-switch siren. See page 14 in
the Install Guide below. You want it to be installed outside the cabin so
it can be heard. Under the roof overhang near the cabin door would be one
suggested possible location.

5th, As your boat does not have the normal "chassis ground" of an
automobile or sports vehicle, you will need to run a ground wire to the
various components from the boat's battery.

6th, you can also add a DEI 508D Perimeter Sensor to the system to trigger
the alarm before someone enters the cabin, and it would provide protection
to the stern area.

We suggest that you could mount it inside the glass on the cabin door,
probably up near the top, facing out toward the motor. We would give you
more information if you are interested in this.

7th, you could also add the DEI 520T Back Up Battery to the system.

If your battery and connections are near the motor, and possibly accessible
to disconnect or cut the battery cable, then putting a DEI 520T inside the
cabin in the 12 volt supply line assures the Merlin 2000 will have
poser. It would also trigger the alarm if power is lost.

8th, yes, you can add the DEI 795W pager system.

9th, DEI has just recently discontinued manufacture of the DEI 793T Pager
Strip antenna and does not have any know plans for a replacement part. The
DEI 795W pager was designed to use a vehicle's radio antenna, or the 793T
pager strip antenna. You may have to use a car radio antenna with the 795W
pager.

Great thread to start. I noticed that the company you contacted is in Dublin, Ohio. Just so happens, this company is only about 4 miles from my office, so if anybody needs any more info than what is on the website/brochures, etc., I can always try to swing by and talk to them directly and get any measurements of anything. FreighterGazer: That address caught my eye. I grew up on Sawmill road in Dublin. Just South of Ohio State University airport. Don Scott field in the old days. Brother-in -law and sister both work at Honda. Things really went south when Jack Nicholas built the big golf course. About 1979 at midnight I rode in a friends factory (Just like Smokey and the bandit)79 Trans Am. A Columbus policman had ordered it thru Hadocy pontiac with all options and declined it. So my friends parents bought it for him. As I clung for dear life we headed out route 33 towards Marysville at midnight. I watched as the speedo that went to 100 get wraped around to 45 and stopped. But the tach continued to climb. To demo the 4 wheel disk brakes he locked em up at 100 mph until we stopped. The cloud of stinkin tire smoke cought up to us about 10 seconds later. Then demo'd the posi-trac as (pinned in my seat) we emediatlly luanched back up to 100 mph. I have never ridden in a car that was so quick off the line and had unlimited top end. Right from the factory. Amazing. I never rode in that car again. He spun the main bearings at 8000 miles. Before that car he had the exact 1977 Starsky and Hutch Ford Grand Torino. With a flashing red light people really do pull over...
But that is a whole nuther story.

Back to on topic: Nothing yet for the CD other than to leave the door unlocked while in the yard. That way they won't break down the door as they steal my outdated GPS.

Poor mans anti-theft for tow vehicle: For the big sum of about $2 I always wire up a micro switch to the safety switch that is already on the clutch peddle. For an automatic trans I wire it to the safety switch that tells the vehicle to be in park or nuetral. Either way the vehicle won't crank until you hold in the momentary micro-switch. I usually place it around the parking brake release on the truck just under the dash lip. Nobody ever notices that I push the switch to start. I even showed my dad where the switch is hidden and he can't start it. (Switch is smaller than a pencil eraser). If somebody else wants to drive it, I have a wire with two alligator clips. Just bridge the connection under the dash and truck starts as normal. Most car jackings are in gas stations or intersections. Sure buddy steal my truck. The keys are in it! :mrgreen: Like the owner this device is cheap and always armed and ready.

For an EBayer that person sure has a marginal feedback history. 27 negatives in the last month! I would be VERY careful buying from them.
 
Using 27Mhz to transmit on, the range won't be very great so, unless you're quite close to your boat, you won't hear the page. If you could use the phone lines :phone , it'd be a lot more reliable. Might be better to buy a Rottweiler and throw food into the boat once a day and muck it out once a week! :cry

The first car I bought was a '78 Trans Am with the high output 6.6 liter V8, 4spd manual, positraction rear end. It sure seemed fast at the time. IIRC, about 220 HP and 320 ft-lbs of torque. 0-60 was about 7.5 seconds. The best mileage I got was 18 mpg. The worst was 11.

I now own a 2003 4Runner with a 4.7 liter V8, 4WD, and 5 spd automatic transmission. hp and torque ratings are almost identical to my old Trans Am. The 0-60 time is just about identical as well. But the mileage is significantly better (about 19 mpg on highway, 17 mpg in mixed city/highway), plus I've got 4WD and lots more room.

The 78-79 Trans Am may have seemed fast in its day, but it's nothing compared to what you can get now. Check out the new Mustang GT. 0 to 60 in around 5.5 seconds and price is less than $30k.
